Left the States 4 days before me,but we went to Khe Sanh on the same C-123.
He never let me forget that he was 4 days shorter than I was.
Khe Sanh,Cau Lu,the Rock pile.Quang Tri,Hill 10 and 55.An Hoa and Phu Bai.
He had 14 days to go and I had 18.
We split a KOOL and a hot coke.I gave him shit for leaving the filter wet and he gave me shit for being so skinny I didn't even have lips.Did I say he was so big and so black that the night didn't have anything on him.
We took our positions for the night and then the shit happened.
We had so many new guys and such bad leadership.
When the nva came through us they tossed a satchel charge in his position.Blew off both his legs.
Red and green tracers,pop flares and screams.A Marine tried to tie off his stumps and our Corpman hit him with morphine.
Even with all that some med-evac pilot had the balls to land and pick him up.
It took me twenty years before I could call his folks and tell them I was there-with him-and for him.
They told me about his sisters and his wife.How they were real religious and what he had done was wrong.
I told them he was a real Brother and I would never forget him.
Someday,I suppose,we'll be layin' in some grass smokin' a Kool and splittin' a warm Coke.
I will never forget you Bro.
