Shit, I haven’t kept up with my ribbons since I ETS’d 13+ years ago. I’d like to make a display with them but I’m missing some, have some I never received and they just generally look like hammered dog crap with the oak leaf clusters falling off.

Another thing that kinda ticks me off is I know my DD214 is probably not correct when it comes to awards. I did a European Out in Germany in 1992 and took 2 months Terminal Leave. When I reported to my PSC to get my paper work and pay, and kiss Uncle Sam good by, they didn’t even have my DD214 typed up yet! I sat at a desk with an PFC and had to remember off the top of my head every award and the quantity I received plus every school I attended!

Does the .gov keep these records on file? It’d be nice to get an actual copy of my personal records with all the orders I received for schools, awards ect., my complete military history. I still have most of my Army papers but am sure I’ve lost some over time.
Link Posted: 1/12/2006 4:58:56 AM EDT
I would take a picture but its too sad lol.. Basically the 3 Basic Training Ribbons then the NCO Professional Development Ribbon with a numeral 2.
Link Posted: 1/12/2006 6:03:27 AM EDT
Well I dug em’ up! Not a pretty sight and as I mentioned not up to date. But here’s what I could find, with an extra set of wings I earned in Germany added for your humor!

Don't feel bad about that EIB, I knew some NCO's that earned their EIB after their CIB. They said it meant more as they had to work harder to earn it.

Did you have a break in service? I see you have a DS 1 ribbon (but not the accompanying Kuwait, Suadi medals), CIB with star (meaning you had to have gotten it in either DS 1 or Somalia, and then for a tour somewhere for GWOT). But you only show one award of the Good Conduct Medal and are just now an E5(P). What's up?

Is the good conduct medal a "given" now? I was in the RA '73/'77, made buck sgt after 3 years. Never had a art.15 or such. Most of my piers were still spec 4's. I didn't get a GCM nor did anyone I knew. Also at that time most people didn't make it past spec 4 in 4 years, are you making rank faster these days?
Link Posted: 1/13/2006 8:43:26 PM EDT
It varies by MOS but promotion as an 11B has been quick with points need for promotion being around 530 i think. I made E-4 in 1yr and will be an E-5 in a little under 2yrs. I'm in a little different setup though. I'm sure there are guys making E5 in under 3yrs now with no problem.

8 year break in service(got out in 95 - E5 came back in 03 - E2), Have never received orders for another GC, CIBs Were awarded from 89-95 in Panama, Somalia, Vigilant Warrior(Kuwait-Iraqi border 94), Korea(border skirmishes) Columbia, The Phillipines, Haiti and West Africa. Not just DS1. GWOT(S) is awarded to anyone serving during it. GWOT(E) is awarded to those deployed to fight it I only wear the "S" beacause I choose to wear the Iraqi Campaign instead of the "E"(It's one or the other, unles you've deployed twice) That's whats up.

From http://www.americal.org/awards/ndsm.htm

To signify receipt of a second or subsequent award of the NDSM, a service star will be worn on the service ribbon. . .

DOOH! Yeah your right. I read the wrong ribbon description. No excuses, cool points gone forever. And it's MSG not SFC so I really look stupid. I am going to order one of those thin medal racks online. The plastic racks you see in clothing sales don't work if you have an attachement to your ribbon and the metal ones are a pain in the ass with this many medals.

There isn't a decent clothing sales anywhere within 300 miles of my current assignment and mail order is real slow.

FWIW, and I haven't been arsed to take a photo of my uniform, here's a generic rackbuilder image. I'm told I may be eligible for an ARCAM, but I don't know if that's a 'gimme' which is time-based, or if it's actually something which is selectively awarded.

Being foreign, the jump wings (which are huge, they're about as wide as the three-ribbon-rack) are worn on the right side above the unit awards.

I see a lot of people like myself on here. Guardsmen with an Iraq tour.

I always find that badge amusing. It was initially going to be termed the Close Combat Badge, until, I guess, some historically-minded chap pointed out that in WWII, the Germans had a Close Combat Clasp which was a bayonet and a grenade surrounded by a wreath, and someone might possibly notice a similarity.

It was a little harder to get the German badges, the lowest grade (bronze) required fifteen days' worth of action. Gold required 50.

It also had to be, quite literally, close combat. i.e. Grenade range or closer, though I'm not sure how rigidly it was followed.

When I was in, there was a war, but I didn't go. I went to Korea instead. Not a lot there, but I had fun until they kicked me out for being broken. And don't give me too much crap. I haven't seen an AR670-1 in 10 years.

Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal, ARCAM. It's the USAR good conduct medal, awarded for a four year periods of, well, good conduct. It sits just below the Army good conduct medal and is a full size medal.

I can't qualify for the Combat Action Badge as it requires 2 eyewitness accounts. During the situation which would have qualified me for the badge, there was only two of use present and we were busy engaging bad guys. Noone else was there until after the fact. Oh, weel. We all know we do it for the money anyway!
