I heard a story today that the University of Massachusetts wants to change its mascot.  What is its present mascot you ask? The Minuteman.  Yes, the Minuteman.  The very symbol of the power of the common man, and they want to change it.  Their reasoning is that the Minuteman is a) single gendered, b) single ethnic, and c) CARRIES A FIREARM!!!!  Needless to say I was awestruck.  I guess history class doesn't teach the importance of the role that the Minuteman played in the creation and protection of this, the greatest of nations.    

It's truly sad that the government educational system, combined with general apathy and self-centeredness in the population, is robbing people of the rich heritage we have in this country.

I believe they shelved the idea because of public pressure.
