I was getting kinda curious about what kind of stuff the average cop carries while on duty. Of course, there's the usual stuff like badge, guns, ammo, cuffs, and radio. What about nonlethal weapons like nightsticks, mace-like sprays, electric stun-guns? Flashlights, phone? Back-up gun or knife? As long as we're at it, what kind of gun and how much spare ammo? Oh yeah, does anyone carry those zip-tie things instead of cuffs? Or those funny hinged cuffs? Anything else interesting? Damm, that's a lot of questions. Oh well. [:D]

-OC spray (CAPSTUN; effective but short-ranged and a cone spray that gets everybody present, including you, your back-up, innocent bystanders and small animals. If you ever hear anyone coughing into the radio, you know they are asking for assistance because they just gassed a combative subject. It also takes hours to decon).
-Flashlight ring.
-2 spare magazines.
-2 keyed black flexcuffs, threaded under the pouches.
-Body armor (always).
-Back-up gun (a Glock 30, because my wife won't let buy anymore guns, unless they are really cheap; think foreign surplus at the gun show).
-in one breast pocket, a pen, white-out pen and a notebook w/ a Miranda card paperclipped to the front.
-in the other breast pocket, business cards, traffic template, card w/ my association's emergency contact #s and 24 legal #, prox card, another pen, and a handcuff key.
-Oh yeah, and a badge and a nametag.

I'd be here a couple of hours if I tried to list everything in my car. Most of that stuff is issued, and my agency is excellent about equipment. They issue us everything and are always in the process of buying more new stuff. If I were still on the streets, I don't know where I would have put anything else; I was out of room in my car. Among the major items, every officer has an assigned take home vehicle, issued as soon as they complete FTO. Every vehicle has two shotguns, one for beanbag only. Every car has video, stop sticks, radar and a bunch of other stuff, Cars get retired at 70K. Cell phone and pager issued. Uniforms and dry cleaning provided. Weapons and duty gear issued. Lots of training on all of the above. One of the highest paid agencies in our area, with great community support (and a great community to work for). It is really nice working for a progressive agency.

Now that I work in plain clothes, I carry a pistol, a set of handcuffs, a pager and a cell phone. If I am going to in the field, I add a vest, a radio and a couple of magazines.

You make think I'm crazy but very litte. After almost 22 years of wearing this gear and sitting in a unit my lower back is totally screwed up. At this point in my career the only thing on my black basket weave belt is a Glock 22c in SS3 holster, cuffs, OC spray, baton ring, and small Surefire light. That's it. A few years ago I removed my expandable baton and my extra clips and put the clips in my door with easy access. Just removing those 2 things reduced the weight by half I would estimate.

Just the other day I happened to be in a mall in Orlando. I noticed that there were a few sherrifs hanging around who were carrying 2 pistols on their belts, one in the normal strong-side position, and another in a kinda cross-draw position. Doesn't carrying a backup gun openly kinda defeat the purpose?

As for Oly, I noticed that those collapsable batons weigh a ton, like 3-4 pounds for every one I've seen. Don't know if many cops still carry plain ol' nighsticks, but they seem pretty nice. I got one a while ago for a cop halloween costume; really relieves anger to beat on the couch with it for a while. [}:D]

i saw that on cops in buffalo once too. I carry my backup on my vest.

Ditto on the narc thing. Where/how do you carry the 1911?  I am issued a Sig Sauer P226, but on duty (undercover) I carry a Glock 27 in a High Noon IWB holster down the front of my pants, and often times an additional NAA Guardian .32 in right (strong side) pants pocket.  Since my specific role allows (more like requires due to the circumstances) me to where loose and baggy jeans, big untucked shirts and the like, the pocket and IWB carry style is very easy to pull off.  I also carry a CRKT Crawford/Kasper clipped into one of my pockets.

Hey Mace what you probably observed in the crossdraw holster wasn't a zero but a taser/pistol.  Although we can't carry them yet, a few of the local p.d.'s here carry the taser in the same fashion as you described.
