Wait until you retire. I didn't think of it at all until my last day and I stood there in front of the shield desk and had to hand it over for the last time. I had carried that shield for a lot of years. It was at my side for many many years and a lot of scrapes. It was shinny and new when I got it and now, like me, it had a lot of scars and scrapes. We had been through a lot together and now I just had to let it go. Needless to say it took me a few minutes to finally let it go and walk away.
Anyone ever see the movie "The Princess Bride"? Where at the end the guy describes how he is the dread pirate roberts but he actually got it from another guy and that guy got it from the guy before him and so he gave it to the Spaniard. So I think of my shield that way. Someone had it before me and someone else has it now. I was not the cop. The shield was the cop. I was just lucky enough to have been able to wear it for a while. I hope the new guy that has it sees the long history behind it and wears it with honor and safety for his time....
