Saskatchewan Mountie shot at home, RCMP says

An off-duty RCMP officer was shot in Saskatchewan Monday night, but he is expected to survive, according to officials.

"What I can tell you is that last night at around 8 p.m. in the community of Carrot River, Sask., an off-duty RCMP officer was at his home when he was shot and injured," Cpl. Brian Jones said Tuesday in a telephone interview with CTV Newsnet.

However, he said the RCMP is not releasing the full extent of the Mountie's injuries.

"It does appear he is going to survive those injuries, he was taken to hospital in the neighbouring community of Nipawin and then last night ended up in hospital in Saskatoon."

The injured officer, who has not been named, is a five-year RCMP veteran, said Jones.

One person has been taken into custody in connection with the investigation.

"But I must caution there's been no charges laid at this point in time, it's still very early in the investigation."

It does not appear as if the Mountie and the person who has been taken into custody know each other.

"There's no obvious connection, there's certainly no family connection or anything like that," Jones said.

The RCMP spokesperson said that it is too early to say the shooting was linked to the victim's occupation.

"I think the important message at this point in time is that any time anyone is a victim, regardless of their occupation, a victim of violence, whether it be on the street or at their home is unsettling, and is a concern," he said.

"But at this point in time in the investigation, we don't want to get ahead of ourselves and say it's directly linked to his occupation because we don't know that."

Carrot River, a small town of about 1,200, is located in northeast Saskatchewan, about 180 km from Prince Albert.

The shooting revived memories of the deaths of four RCMP officers, who were gunned down by James Roszko near Mayerthorpe, Alta. last March.

Second:
What?!?!?! How could it be???? Didn't they ban guns for the most part up there??? Surely every person in Canada who might have the propensity to shoot someone turned their guns in when they were supposed to. Don't tell me that more gun laws aren't solving the problem?!?!?!?! Now what do they do?

My suggestion would be to tie the a$$hole that shot that officer to a pole and execute him by firing squad on live television.
