Everyone where I work seems to keep their old badges when they are promoted. I’ve also seen a handful of gold Detective badges in the hands of people that are no longer Detectives.

Upon retirement we are issued a retirement credentials and badge that looks different than the one we normally wear. The Sheriff also administratively promotes us one grade upon retirement and gives us our duty weapon.

that's unusual. Does that affect retirement pay or anything to do with pensions?

I've never heard of it.


Also

For every person I know that has retired around the country, I've probably had contact with 30 that didn't, so that may be a factor lol

No, it doesn’t. Pension is based on your highest 5 years of pay, so the administrative promotion doesn’t impact it at all.

Kept all mine thus far (FF, Sgt, LT, Capt). They’ve recently gotten stricter about brass when promoting or leaving, but you’re right that the higher you go the less they care.
