As I was educated in great detail by our local ATT FirstNet guy.....Unless you get the black sim card there is no way to receive priority.  You get the FirstNet discount package and you get in on the ground floor, but the black sim cards are incompatible with a 7 and that leaves you competing with the masses.

You have it right. I didn't know the black SIM is incompatible with the 7.

I assume, but not at all trying to come off like the expert.  Only regurgitating what I was told by the local guy....so we all know how that goes.

And double check everything transferred over to the new phone.

I just took a quick glance and thought everything transferred. I lost a lot of pictures.

I like the concept but ATT has garbage coverage around here and everywhere I travel.

There should be no reason I can't walk in to my current providers shop and show my ID or whatever and get all the same benefits as Firstnet.

Guessing ATT is getting Uncle Sugar money for it

I got FirstNet in January.  So far it is going very well.

Cons from the people in my area almost unanimously.......Pay close attention to all billing issues and swap over.  Our local ATT has screwed that part up severely.  Made it overly complicated.  I am gtg now.   You need an iPhone 8 or better on the Apple side to actually take advantage of the FirstNet services.  You can get it, but won't be able to use it with say an iPhone6.

Beyond that, I am pleased so far and give it a thumbs up.  The billing issues are totally due to the local store I think.  You gotta get ALL the internet stuff verified and filled out.

They are indeed. Firstnet was put out as a bid contract that AT&T won.

This is an issue that just started with my iPhone 8+, within the last month or so while trying to load up the App Store.

Just got my first bill.  It went down lower than I originally thought.  From 130 a month on a civilian plan with unlmited data, tethering, voice/text ect to 58 dollars a month with all the same features.

Had it for a while now, unlimited tethering was worth the switch for me.  Had 5G over the weekend while in Dayton, OH, not available where I live yet.

Based on what I was told by the ATT FirstNet specialists, that phone is incapable of taking advantage of the black sim card that gets you priority FirstNet service.  You can use that phone on FirstNet but it is no different than regular ATT service.

You should check that out.  You may not be getting full benefit from your FirstNet account.

ETA: iPhone 7 is NOT band 14 compatible.

First net called me about 6 weeks ago and said they needed to verify my creds. I go by their store a few days later and the manager looks at my account and says that Im good to go. A week ago wednesday I get a call as Im about ready to board a 4 seater airplane for a back country flight into the wilderness of Idaho for a 7 day bear hunt with my boy. The lady on the phone said that she needed me to verify my creds again. I told her that I did a few weeks before and she could call the store manager, that I didnt have time to mess with it. She then told me that my phone would be shut off if I didnt. I asked to speak to her boss and told her the story and that if after being a customer for 18 years, if I get out of the woods in a week and my phone was turned off we would have issues and that I would yank all the lines I had with them.

So, when I got out, my cell was shut off. Monday I switched 5 lines to Verizon.

For those whom don't want to switch or don't have good AT&T coverage in your area should have your agency look into GETS and WPS. system has been in place for many years with Telecom companies to give entities meeting criteria priority access to phone system.  Not as good as FirstNet but no need to switch carries or anything.  I think Sprint even ended the $5 month charge for WPS a couple years ago.  Anyway something to look into if FirstNet isn't ideal for your area right now.

WPS won't give you better coverage (just higher priority).

GETS is for landlines, and only helps if many circuits are down (like after a hurricane or other massive damage). The rest of the time landlines work fine.

Sorry, wasn't clear in my post.  Previous posters mentioned interest in first net but said AT&T didn't have good coverage in AOR.

Intent of my post was to make them aware of WPS.  Similar intent of First Net-- priority/potential for call completion during high system use.  Not as easy to use with the code input but still an option when you NEED to get a call through, Using same infrastructure as public.

Only way to improve coverage is build more sites or Telco deploy COW or COLT.

I switched from Verizon to first net last year. It is way cheaper, but but the internet is slower, and the coverage is not as good. I have not been in a situation to see if I get call priority over other people. So far it is cheap enough that it makes up for the drop in performance.

I've had it for a few months now. It has seemed to be ok so far, I want to run a SpeedTest on it tonight, I've been way to busy to worry about it until now. The price point was definitely enough to get me to switch.

I switched over to FirstNet from T-Mobile in February of this year and have been very happy. My bill is the same, coverage is better, and speeds are a lot better in pretty much every area that I'm in.

The only thing I'm less than impressed with is the online billing portal. It's not user friendly at all. But I have it set on auto-pay and it's been fine.

Screenshot of a speed test:

To be fair, coverage and internet speed is going vary greatly depending on location. Looking a coverage maps can be helpful, but honestly try talking to people/reading reviews of people who have normal ATT Wireless in your area. Having talked to our local representative the new Black Sim gives you priority but coverage will be the same.

I plan on switching to First Net soon to take advantage of discounted phones. We have been with Sprint for 20 years but they refuse to deal on phones so we are going to walk.

GETS will prioritize your wireless call when it hits the land segment of the circuit. WPS prioritizes the wireless segment.

GETS will help when they throttle or reroute circuits in an emergency.

What I don't know, is how they implemented FirstNET into the priority system. But honestly, I haven't been keeping up lately.

I see some of their cards in the firehouse. I use Verizon now. Verizon has good connections in NYC and I nEed to check with folks if AT&T is any good in SW Florida. Can you keep the AT&T discount after you retire?

Made the switch to Firstnet last month. Other than a cheaper monthly bill I've not noticed any difference over my prior AT&T service. I will say that Firstnet needs to get off their asses and make an app like the My AT&T app. Logging into the website to pay my bill is a pain in the dick. Otherwise I have no complaints.

Technically you cannot. That really all depends on if you or your account manager report your change of status to Firstnet. I'm the account manager for my agency and it's up to me to add or remove authorized users. I suspect a lot of people aren't going to bother updating personnel status due to retirement.

I got it a couple months ago, signing up was easy and quick.

If you have an existing AT&T plan you keep any upgrade eligibility when you port over, and coverage for me has been the same, if not a little better.  I use it primarily in misdstate NY, and Queens/Suffex/Nassau.  More than once during outages other people haven't been able to call out or use data and I've had no issues, but that's only the case for those with the black sim card.  The wireless hotspot option is well worth the extra $5 a month.

I upgrade my phone to the Note 10+, opted for insurance and early upgrade, and I'm still paying less per month total with firstnet over my previous 8gigs a month plan.

I have 5 lines of unlimited on Verizon.  We all just got new iPhone XR for Christmas.  Including the 5 new phones the bill is $154.60 with all taxes and fees.  Damn good discount for LEO retirees.  AT&T just doesn’t have the same coverage as Verizon.

True, but we had a major outage in my area a little over a month ago, even regular AT&T service was down as well as everyone else, Firstnet was up and running at full speed.

We have Verizon on the apparatus tablets, they were down too, so I was using my personal cell as a wifi spot.

The assistant chief just installed a FirstNet sim in my mdt (the rest of the fleet is still using verizon).  He told me to drive around the city and try to see if it slows down or drops out.

I think he just gave me permission to watch high-def movies all night while driving around the city...

It's actually pretty good.  All of us that have FirstNet phones are getting 100mbps + in our area and the computer was getting the same.
I only have Netflix so I set it to high def and just had the office playing non stop in the background all night.  No issues.

It's $54/month with unlimited hotspot.  I brought my own phone over that was band 14 capable.

If your current phone is compatible don't let them scam you into a new phone.
