The Lexington police officer hit by an SUV Thursday night has died.

An SUV struck Bryan J. Durman, 27, shortly after 10 p.m. at the intersection of Alabama and North Limestone in downtown Lexington and then took off.

Police located the man they say was driving the maroon Expedition that hit Durman a short time later. Officers arrested Glenn Doneghy, 33, early Friday morning, after a standoff at an apartment building along Northland Avenue.

Police say Durman was working a call involving a vehicle playing loud music when he was hit by the SUV driven by Doneghy. Officers blocked off several intersections in order to clear a route as an ambulance rushed the injured officer to UK Hospital.

Doneghy faces a laundry list of charges, including first degree murder, assault charges related to his arrest, and possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia.

Durman had been a Lexington police officer since December 2007.

Shawnee Firefighter Fatality

I believe he was USMC, as well.

Shawnee firefighter who died in blaze is remembered
By JIM SULLINGER
The Kansas City Star

Shawnee firefighter John Glaser rushed into a burning house Saturday night, ready to save the lives of two people who he was told might have been inside.

The house was empty. But before anyone knew that, Glaser became separated from his team as firefighters felt their way blind through smoke-filled rooms. He called for help. Other firefighters found him unconscious near the rear of the first floor seven or eight minutes later. He was pronounced dead at Shawnee Mission Medical Center.

The 33-year-old Olathe man is the first Shawnee firefighter to die in the line of duty. He leaves a wife and two children.

CHP Officer Killed in High-Speed Chase
http://www.sbsun.com/ci_15280504
REDLANDS - A California Highway Patrol
motorcycle officer died in a fiery crash Friday during a high-speed
chase on city streets.

The body of Officer Thomas Coleman, a seven-year veteran of
the department, was carefully draped with an American flag and guarded
by a red tent as his colleagues investigated the 6:30 a.m. crash that
started when four men refused to pull over.

"He was a good officer

Avenue in Redlands. (LaFonzo Carter Staff Photographer)

and
one of the hardest working that we have," said CHP Officer Hope Maxson.
"He absolutely loved what he did. He loved the Highway Patrol. He loved
being a motor officer. He loved going to work everyday."

Coleman, a 33-year-old Fontana resident, leaves behind a wife and
two young children.

The pursuit began at Mountain View Avenue near the 10 Freeway
after Coleman tried to stop a silver Ford Focus for an unknown traffic
violation.

When the driver sped off, Coleman turned on his lights and
siren and began chasing the Ford north on Mountain View. As he headed
east on San Bernardino Avenue, Coleman radioed in to dispatch that the
chase had reached speeds over 100 mph.

Then came the calls from motorists reporting

that a CHP motorcycle officer had collided
with a big rig.

When Coleman tried to cross Alabama Street, investigators say he
hit the big rig as it traveled south through the intersection.

Coleman's motorcycle burst into flames following the crash and
his body was thrown several yards south of his bike.

His blue and yellow helmet lay near the burned, mangled
wreckage of the motorcycle.

"It brings us a little closer," said CHP Officer Jeff Briggs.
"Whenever an

officer
dies in the line of duty, it feels like we've all known them for their
whole career."

The fleeing driver eventually crashed on Lugonia Avenue near the
Citrus Plaza shopping center, where CHP drivers had already set up
anticipating their escape route.

Four men inside the Ford tried to run away but were taken into
custody. They were still being interviewed late Friday and CHP
officials said it was too early to tell whether any arrests would be
made.

"Some signigicant charges are possible," said CHP Officer
Daniel Hesser.

Police cordoned off the intersection for hours while a CHP
Major Accident Investigation Team combed the area for evidence and
snapped photographs of the scene.

As word of the tragedy rippled through the department, more
than 20 uniformed officers arrived to pay tribute to Coleman. CHP
officers from outerlying areas were called in to patrol the highways.

They stood around his body with their heads bowed, many wiping
away tears. The officers stood at attention and saluted as Coleman's
body was loaded into the back of a coroner's van.

CHP officers placed a black band over their badges Friday to
mourn the loss of Coleman. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger said state
flags will be flown at half mast until the officer is buried.

"He was an outstanding officer who demonstrated his dedication
and selflessness through his hard work in the line of duty,"
Schwarzenegger said in a written statement.

Coleman worked in the Altadena office for five years before
coming to the San Bernardino office. He became a motorcycle officer
exactly two years ago today. Coleman joined the CHP shortly after
leaving the Marine Corp, friends said.

"He was just one of those guys," said Maxson, who was friends
with Coleman and worked with him. "He was always smiling, always
friendly. He was so funny."

Coleman was a dedicated family man and loved spending with
with them, even bringing his wife and children to last month's CHP San
Bernardino Motorcycle Safety Fair and Expo where he taught the public
how to safely ride motorcycles.

"It's hard," Briggs said. "It makes you look at your own life
and your own family."

Coleman is the fourth CHP officer in the Inland area to be
killed in the last seven years. Officer Shannon Distel died Aug. 27,
2003, in Riverside after a pickup truck pulling a trailer turned in
front of him. Officer James Goodman was killed June 3, 2004, in Redlands
after a vehicle hit him while he was pursuing a suspected drunken
driver. On Feb. 25, 2006, Officer Gregory Bailey died in Rancho
Cucamonga when a motorist struck him on the side of the road.

Coleman is survived by his wife, Jamie Jean Coleman, a
2-year-old son, Ryan Joseph Coleman and an 11-month-old daughter,
Shaylen Marie Coleman, his mother, Janice Womack and sister, Kathleen
Pool.

]Veteran Trooper and Father of 4 Killed by Drunk Driver

http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/articles/2010/06/19/trooper_dragged_to_death_in_bizarre_i_95_accident/

BROCKTON — A veteran state trooper was killed while on a highway traffic detail in Mansfield early yesterday morning in a bizarre accident in which one alleged drunk driver plowed into another, trapping the trooper under a car as his body was dragged across the highway.

Tragic accident on I-95Sergeant Douglas Weddleton, a 52-year-old father of four, had parked his cruiser at the entrance to a highway exit ramp on the northbound side of Interstate 95 with his blue lights flashing to prevent traffic from entering about 1:30 a.m. when an alleged drunk driver in an Acura tried to maneuver past him, police said.

Weddleton stopped the Acura and began talking to the driver, Kenneth Weiand, a 43-year-old state probation worker. At that moment, police said, a Ford truck driven by Anthony Perry, a 45-year-old carpenter from Hyde Park who had been watching the NBA Finals at a Rhode Island bar, slammed into the Acura, police said. Perry later told police he was traveling at 65 miles per hour, according to court documents.

The force of the impact caused the Acura, with Weiand inside, to veer left, striking Weddleton and trapping the trooper underneath the car. He was dragged across three lanes of the highway, as the nearby construction workers desperately banged on the Acura’s windows, trying to get the car to stop, according to a State Police report.

Perry was arraigned yesterday on charges including negligent motor vehicle homicide and operating under the influence, and Weiand was charged with driving while under the influence of alcohol. Both men pleaded not guilty yesterday in Attleboro District Court.

Yesterday, mourners brought flowers and food to the trooper’s family at their Brockton home, where a trooper stood sentry outside to keep media away.

He was a dedicated police officer and even more so a devoted and loving husband and a doting father to his four boys, of whom he was extremely proud,’’ said Colonel Marian McGovern, the State Police superintendent, who notified Weddleton’s family. “To see four young boys who idolized their father and to tell them their father was no longer with them will remain forever in my heart.’’

Weddleton had worked 15 years in the department’s ballistics unit, but left in 2008 to patrol highways out of the Foxborough barracks so he could spend more time with his wife and children.

Shortly before working at the roadside detail, he had attended a graduation ceremony for his youngest son. From there, he rushed straight to the road construction site in Mansfield.

Melanie Martin, a family friend and neighbor, said that Weddleton liked to work in his yard and drive his sons to baseball practice. Weddleton leaves his wife, Judith, and his sons, Steven, 26; Mark, 23; Ross, 18; and Matt, 14.

Assistant Chief Carl Persing
Dale City Voluntter Fire Department
LODD Notification

It is with deep regret and sorrow that the Dale City Volunteer Fire Department announces the death of Assistant Chief Carl Persing.  Chief Persing  joined the Dale City Volunteer Fire Department in 2001 and was the Chief of Battalion 5.  He is survived by his parents, brother, sister, children Megan and Nicholas, and his Fire Department family.

Carl retired from the City of Manassas Fire and Rescue Department in 2007.  He also served with distinction with the Burke Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department, the Occoquan-Woodbridge-Lorton Volunteer Department, the Dumfries-Triangle Volunteer Fire Department, the Fort Belvoir Fire Department, the Metropolitan Washington Airport Authority Fire Department, the Silver Hill Volunteer Fire Department, and the United States Army.

Carl was a pillar of the fire service in Northern Virginia, having served with many fire departments, in both career and volunteer capacities over the years. Best known by his nickname, "Blackjack", he could often be found sitting in his favorite folding camping chair on the ramp of the firehouse chatting with "his troops". A mentor, friend, inspiration, and father-figure to so many firefighters in the area, he was truly someone who enjoyed his job, and did it tireslessly. Carl was diagnosed with cancer five years ago, fought several recurrances, and finally succumbed to his illness Monday afternoon, leaving behind a deeply saddened and forever grateful fire family.

Chief, you will be missed. Know that all who knew you loved you, and will carry out our duties to the best of our abilities in your honor, the way you taught us to do. See you on the other side, Blackjack...

FROM STAFF REPORTS
BARSTOW • A California Highway Patrol officer was killed early Sunday morning during a traffic stop on Interstate 15 when a passing motorist hit his patrol car and then struck the officer, officials said.

Officer Justin McGrory, 28, and a driver who had been pulled over were standing on the right shoulder of northbound I-15 south of Hodge Road around 3:38 a.m., the CHP said.

A red 2009 Pontiac G6 driven by Rafael Garcia, 18, of Las Vegas veered onto the right shoulder, clipping the right rear of the patrol car, then continued and struck McGrory. He suffered major injuries and was taken by air ambulance to St. Mary Medical Center in Apple Valley, where he died. McGrory’s partner, Officer  Ryan Bostrom, was not hurt.

McGrory had been a CHP officer since October 2007 and was assigned to the Barstow Area Office. He is survived by his wife, a 7-year-old daughter, a 4-year-old son and a 1-year old son.

Garcia was arrested for vehicular manslaughter at the scene. This collision is still under investigation.

The crash forced the closure of northbound Interstate 15 for about nine hours, and traffic backed up about 15 miles to Victorville. Traffic was diverted to D Street and National Trails Highway was used to bypass the traffic jam. For traffic updates, click on www.www.ie511.org.

June has been a terrible month.  Stay safe.

Another CHP officer was struck and killed in Barstow early Sunday. Two motorcycle officers were fatally struck in incidents earlier this month in Los Angeles and Redlands, and a CHP pilot died in a plane crash in Imperial County last month.

Original story:

A CHP officer died late Sunday from injuries he suffered when he was hit by a car earlier in the evening south of Paso Robles.

Just after 6:30 p.m., a woman driving a copper-colored Toyota Corolla along South River Road — between the two intersections with Spanish Camp Road — turned a corner at high speed and lost control, according to the CHP.

The officer — who works out of the agency’s Templeton office — had been outside his patrol car, checking on an abandoned vehicle that had been reported just before 6 p.m., according to Sheriff’s Department spokesman Rob Bryn.

Someone had reported to authorities that the car was left on the roadside in such a way that it would probably get hit after nightfall, according to the CHP.

The officer was waiting for a tow truck to come and move it when he was struck, Bryn added.

For reasons unknown, the Toyota’s driver did not see the CHP car in the roadway, he said.

The Toyota hit the rear of the officer’s patrol car, sending it forward to where it hit the officer, Bryn said.

The officer flew into the air, landing on the Toyota, which stopped in the northbound lane of South River Road.

He was treated at Twin Cities Community Hospital in Templeton.

A convoy of law enforcement units escorted a hearse van to the Chapel of the Roses in Atascadero, which had been summoned to the hospital, according to CHP dispatches.

The driver of the Toyota did not appear to be injured.

Authorities are not disclosing the names of anyone involved pending more investigation, Bryn said.

No information was made available on whether arrests or citations would be issued.

South  River Road was closed to traffic after the crash, and the scene was “locked down,” with all access to the area barred, according to the CHP.

Two Tampa police officers killed during traffic stop

Tampa, Florida –– Calling this "a very bleak day for us in Tampa," Mayor Pam Iorio and Police Chief Jane Castor shared details of the two "great officers" shot by a suspect Tuesday morning. Both officers have died from their injuries.

Officer Jeff Kocab had served with the Tampa Police Department for just over a year, after spending time with the Plant City Police Department.

Kocab's wife is nine months pregnant. She is due to deliver their baby in one week.

Officer Dave Curtis had been with TPD for about four years, after previously serving as a jail deputy with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.

"Family man" is the phrase that fits Curtis best, Castor said. He has four sons –– ages 9, 8, 5, and 8 months.

The wives of both officers traveled to Tampa General Hospital in the dark hours of Tuesday morning. Officer Kocab's wife had to drive from the family's home in far eastern Polk County to join other family members and officers at TGH.

Kocab's mother lives in Kissimmee, Tampa police spokeswoman Laura McElroy said. She was informed of her son's death by Osceola County Sheriff's deputies.

At a news conference just before sunrise, Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio could barely hold back her emotions as she shared the details she had learned while waiting with the officers' families inside the hospital.

"This a very bleak day for us in Tampa," she said, pausing several times to collect herself.  After she stepped away from the podium and the camera lights switched off, she turned around and quietly burst into tears.

A massive manhunt continues to track down the suspect who shot these two TPD officers. Learn more about the investigation here.

Bridgeport Fire Department suffers 2 LODD's on July 24, 2010.

Lieutenant Steven Velasquez and Firefighter Michel Baik were operating at Three Story Private Dwelling Fire.  It is unclear as to what exactly happened, but shortly after entering the building a mayday call went out from the Lieutenant. They were removed and worked on by the brothers on scene and both of them were pronounced dead at the hospital a short time after.  Both of these fellow firefighters were very good friends of mine and I have worked with them for the past 11 years on the Bridgeport Fire Department in Connecticut.  Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Wednesday, October 01, 2008

A veteran McDonough firefighter was killed early Wednesday morning when his car was hit head-on by a suspected drunk driver, Henry County police said.

Anthony Denoir Ragland, 25, of McDonough died at the scene of the 12:30 a.m. crash on Ga. 155 in Locust Grove, Capt. Jason Bolton said. The other driver, Joseph Mark Butler, 29, of Griffin, was treated for non-life threatening injuries, Bolton said. Butler has been charged with driving under the influence and more charges are pending, he said.

McDonough spokeswoman Casey Case said Wednesday that Ragland was warm, friendly and congenial with a smile that lit up a room. He'd worked with the McDonough department since May 2004 and graduated from Eagle's Landing High School in Stockbridge, she said.

"This is just a sad day in the city of McDonough for everyone who knew Anthony Ragland," Case said. "He literally loved working for the fire department and often volunteered to come in to work. He was one of those young men who was eager to do a good job and loved it."

Case said Ragland volunteered last year to go to south Georgia to help fight wildfires raging there and in Florida.

"He was the kind of guy who stood out, so dedicated," she said.

It is unclear if Ragland was heading home or to work, Case said. Bolton said Ragland was headed northbound on Ga. 155 near Garrison Lane when Butler's car crossed the double yellow line and hit him head-on.

Case said memorial services for Ragland are being made, but she had no details to release Wednesday morning.

Case said Ragland leaves a fiancee and two daughters, ages 3 and 4.

I'm a volunteer firefighter/EMT-B for 3 1/2 years.  Prior to this job, I never had the true appreciation for these lines of work.  Since being a member of this department, I have interacted with many fellow members of the FD and also the local PD.  Fantastic bunch of people.  Everyone serves without hesitation, and I am honored to be part of the team.  My heart goes out to all those who gave their lives on 9/11/01, and before and since then as well.  I know all these men and women (myself included) would gladly offer our lives to serve others.  I hope and pray I never forget the immensity of what Police Officers, Firefighters, EMTs or Paramedics (And anything related) do day in and day out.

God bless you all.

Anchorage Fire Department
10/12/10
You will be missed brother

Tuesday, October 12, 2010 –– After nearly 14 years on the job, Firefighter/Engineer Andy L Mullen worked his last shift at the Anchorage FD on April 8th of this year at Rescue 4. Andy was diagnosed with cancer that was determined by the AFD to have been directly linked to exposure on the job. Andy passed away last night in the loving company of his family and AFD Brothers and Sisters. Andy was a proud member of the AFD and AFD FF's Union, IAFF Local 1264 and their Exec. Board. He leaves a wife and 3 daughters. Andy’s hallmark activity was time spent with his children. His parents reside on Long Island, New York in the same house that Andy was raised in with his brother and sister. This is the first Line of Duty Death that the Anchorage Fire Department has experienced since Firefighter Chuck Whitethorn lost his life in 1976.

HARRISBURG – Pennsylvania Game Commission Wildlife Conservation Officer (WCO) David L. Grove was shot and killed in the line of duty while on patrol around 10:30 p.m., on Nov. 11, along Shrivers Road in Freedom Township, Adams County. Grove, age 31, of Fairfield, Adams County, was investigating reports of ongoing night-time shooting and possible poaching activity in the area.

HARRISBURG – Pennsylvania Game Commission Executive Director Carl G. Roe, on behalf of the entire agency, today offered praise for the Pennsylvania State Police’s swift resolution involving the killing of Wildlife Conservation Officer (WCO) David L. Grove, and to Gov. Edward G. Rendell for directing that the Commonwealth flag be lowered to half-staff in honor of WCO Grove.

“Today’s action by the Pennsylvania State Police and other cooperating law enforcement agencies is characteristic of the professionalism and partnerships that all Pennsylvanians should be proud of,” Roe said. “The State Police truly have lived up to their reputation of being one of the top law enforcement agencies in the world.

“We also appreciate Gov. Rendell’s action and condolences for the loss of WCO Grove, who was a dedicated public servant and officer.”

Roe noted that the U.S. Marshall’s Office, Game Commission WCOs and Deputy WCOs, and numerous municipal police departments responded to the scene of last nights incident and assisted the State Police in this investigation.

It is with the deepest sorrow that Lutherville Volunteer Fire Company announces the Line of Duty Death of Firefighter / Paramedic Mark Falkenhan. Mark, just 43-years old, was a devoted husband, and proud father of two sons.

Mark died on Wednesday, January 19, 2011 while searching for trapped victims in a four-alarm apartment fire at the Towson Crossing Apartments in Hilendale. Mark was performing search and rescue on the third floor when he was overcome by heavy fire conditions after a flashover occurred.

Mark worked for the Secret Service after retiring as a career firefighter from the Baltimore County Fire Department.  He was a life member and past Chief of the Middle River Volunteer Ambulance Rescue Company. In addition, Mark was an accomplished and well respected instructor for the Maryland Fire and Rescue Institute.

We will miss Mark dearly and our deepest sympathy goes out to Mark’s wife and two sons.  Every member of LVFC is hurting after such a tragic accident.

Rest in Peace my Brother

Police Officer Jeffrey Yaslowitz
St. Petersburg Police Department
Florida
End of Watch: Monday, January 24, 2011

Sergeant Tom Baitinger and Officer Jeffrey Yaslowitz were shot and killed while attempting to serve a warrant on a suspect wanted for aggravated battery.

Several members of a regional task force had gone to the home to question a family member about the man's whereabouts. After making contact with the woman, the officers were informed that the man was in the attic and possibly armed.

Officer Yaslowitz, who served on the department's canine unit, had just finished his shift and was en route home when he volunteered to respond to the call.

After unsuccessfully attempting to talk the man out of the attic, Officer Yaslowitz and a member of the United States Marshals Service made entry into the attic and were immediately shot.

Another officer was able to pull the deputy marshal from the attic but was unable to reach Officer Yaslowitz. The suspect then fired from the attic, striking Sergeant Baitinger who was providing cover from the main level.

A SWAT team used a tactical vehicle to breach a wall of the home and came under fire, but was able to recover Officer Yaslowitz. Officer Yaslowitz and Sergeant Baitinger were both transported to a local hospital where they were pronounced dead.

The suspect was found dead several hours later after the home was partially dismantled using heavy machinery.

Sergeant Baitinger had served with the St. Petersburg Police Department for 15 years. He is survived by his wife.

Officer Yaslowitz had served with the St. Petersburg Police Department for 12 years. He is survived by his wife and three children.

We all miss you so much.  God Bless Brothers.....you will NEVER be forgotten.

Police Officer David S. Crawford

Police Officer David Crawford was shot and killed after responding to a report of a suspicious person.

At approximately 10:30 pm, Officer Crawford and another officer responded to a report of a suspicious person in the 700 block of 3rd Avenue after a citizen observed a male walking through his backyard with a broken brick in his hand. At some point during the encounter there was an exchange of gunfire and Officer Crawford was shot and wounded. He was not wearing his vest at the time. He was taken to Bayfront Medical Center where he died from his wounds.

I know all three fine soldiers SPC Jarrell was that MP no matter On or off duty still did his job to make Fort Bragg, NC a little safer of everyone, and like so many of our brothers and sisters behind the badge he helped say two people that night.  The Killer was found in Alabama the next day and was returned to Fort Bragg.

SGT Hines I had seen here just 15 mins. prior to he death.  we were getting ready to turn in our ammo so that we could leave Iraq.  We found her on our way back from getting food.  She had asked us to grab her a plate so she could get some paperwork done to make our job a little easier when we turned in our ammo.

SGT Campbell was like no other soldier I knew.  He was always smiling no matter what was going on, weather we were doing a 20 mile Tour De Bragg run at the home station or getting shot at in  Iraq.  He was always trying to make everyone a better person and a better soldier.  on Sept. 11, 2005 my world had changed again.  My military service has been one not to forget.  As I am writing this right now I know my friends and comrades are placing their life on the line so I can see a better day/night.  People should never forget the price any Officer, fireman/fire woman, EMS or any other public service man or woman makes when they are running into the hot zone while others are running away.  I salute each and everyone of you(past, present and future) that make this would a little better every day.  To all of those who paid the ultimate price in keeping this world in order, I hope to met you when it is my time to go.  I hope that I can serve as honorably as you all did, and be half the person you all were.  To all present and future public service workers lets honor this Fine people with the hard work and dedication that all of these fallen comrades have shown.  Lets not forget nor allow anyone to forget their life stories and thier bravory that has been shown day in and day out by all fallen comrades. (plz replace with the flag you hold dear to your hearts and lets all fly them at half mass in our hearts)

My Brother-In-Law was friends with Officer Schmidt - I had never met him or anything, but I still feel that this is something that should be posted. His last actions were to save the life of his sergeant. He leaves behind a wife and 3 kids. Very sad occurrence.

"Officer Jonathan Schmidt, from Trumann, Arkansas, shoved his superior out of harms way when a gunman unexpectedly opened fire during a routine arrest."

"Schmidt recently received a commendation for saving an infant's life by giving the child mouth-to-mouth resuscitation."

Condolences for Const. Styles [/url]

ctvtoronto.ca

Date: Tuesday Jun. 28, 2011 5:38 PM ET

A dedicated York Regional Police officer and father of two young children died Tuesday morning after being struck by a vehicle and pinned underneath during a traffic stop.

Const. Garrett Styles pulled over a Dodge Caravan with four youth inside at Herald Road and Highway 48 in the town of East Gwillimbury just before 5 a.m., York Regional Police Chief Eric Jolliffe said at a press conference Tuesday afternoon.

Joliffe said that Styles was at the driver-side door when the vehicle accelerated, dragging him about 300 metres.

The 15-year-old unlicenced driver lost control of the vehicle, rolling it over and pinning Styles underneath.

The 32-year-old officer, who would have turned 33 on Sunday, was transported to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries at 6:10 a.m.

Sources told CTV News that Styles was able to call for help on his two-way radio.

Jolliffe appeared distraught as he spoke to reporters, describing Styles as a dedicated officer who loved what he did.

"His supervisors spoke of him as a dedicated, professional, hard-working officer who always had time to assist others," said Jolliffe. "He was well-liked among his peers and he loved being a police officer."

Police said the teenaged driver of the vehicle, from York Region, has been transported to hospital with serious injuries. The three passengers, also youths, are co-operating with police.

Styles is survived by his wife, Melissa, a civilian employee of the York Regional Police Service, and two small children, a two-year-old girl and nine-week-old boy.

A family of officers

Styles came from a police family: His father is retired Staff Sgt. Gary Styles, his cousin is a constable in York Regional's 2 District and his wife works in the force's information management department.

Styles was a seven-year veteran of the force. He joined York Regional Police in December 2003 and became a constable in May 2004. He covered the towns of Newmarket, Aurora and East Gwillimbury.

He had also just wrote a promotional exam to become a sergeant, passing with an 82 per cent.

Jolliffe told reporters outside Southlake Regional Health Centre in Newmarket, Ont. on Tuesday morning that Styles was "competent and capable" and his family would appreciate time to "collect themselves."

Officers were seen hugging and crying at the scene where a smashed up grey minivan still lies in a field beside the highway.

The York Regional Police Homicide Unit and officers with the Collision Reconstruction Unit are investigating. Canine teams are also being used to search the fields.

Highway 48 is currently closed in both directions between Mount Albert Road and Davis Drive. The closure is expected to remain in affect for the day, authorities said in a statement.

‘A stark reminder' of the dangers

Durham Regional Police Chief Constable Mike Ewles said in a statement that the death of Style's is a "stark reminder of how dangerous a job" it is and "how officers put their lives on the line every day for the safety of the community."

Condolences have also been pouring out through social media. Toronto Police tweeted, "R.I.P. Officer. You are a "Hero in Life, Not Death." Thank you for your service."

Flowers and hand-written messages are also being left at York Regional Police's 1 District Headquarters , where the flags are at half-mast.

Styles is the 10th York Region police officer to die on the job. The last York Region police officer to be killed in the line of duty was also struck and pinned by a fleeing vehicle.

Det.-Const. Robert Plunkett was killed in August 2007 while investigating a series of airbag thefts.

The man accused in the incident was found guilty of manslaughter in April. The sentencing for that case is scheduled for Wednesday.

Last winter, Toronto Sgt. Ryan Russell was stuck and killed while trying to stop a snowplow allegedly stolen by a drifter.

This is also the second recent incident in which a police officer suffered injuries in the line of duty.

On June 22, a Peterborough-Lakefield Police Constable was shot in the leg and chest during a drug raid on a suspected crack-house.

Const. Keith Calderwood was released from a Toronto hospital this weekend. He is now resting at home.

"Police officers put their lives on the line each and every day when they leave their families to protect others," Jolliffe told reporters on Tuesday.

"Their selfless sacrifice and hard work ensures our communities are safe places to live and raise a family. Every man and woman who answers the call of policing understands that he or she lives facing ever-present uncertainty and risk."

Garrett will be sorely missed.

R.I.P. Asheville, NC firefighter Captain Jeff Bowen

Capt. Jeff Bowen was among the first firefighters to reach the 445 Biltmore Center medical office building as flames shot out fifth-floor windows, and he had one thing in mind — find anyone left inside.

Heavy smoke filled that top floor, where he and fellow firefighter Jay Bettencourt were searching Thursday afternoon. There was no sprinkler system to help calm the blaze.

Then something went wrong. Bowen called “mayday” over the radio, a distress signal that sent rescuers scrambling to find him.

The 13-year-veteran of the city Fire Department — a husband and father of three — died after being rushed out of the Biltmore Avenue building and on to nearby Mission Hospital. He was 37
