Did the North Vietnamese "set up" the Viet Cong?
Since the north planned on winning, was this a way to score a political victory against the US, as well as getting rid of the South Vietnamese based Viet Cong.
If there was any resistance after the takeover, the Cong had the potential for an experienced resistance force.

Considering the US withdrawal was four to five years after the Tet offensive, you argument doesn't hold much weight. Even if Tet had completely wiped out the VC (which it didn't), they could have rebuilt, or a lot of different things could have happened between that date and the US drawdown through 72 to 73.

I believe the purpose of Tet was to show the US (especially the US public) that there would be no easy, quick victory for the US and the South, and wear away at US resolve.

That's been discussed for several years.  Tet decimated the Viet Cong, which many in North Vietnam may have  found convenient.  Whether it was a deliberate plan or merely unintended consequences is yet to be determined with any certainty.

We abandoned our ally after the 'treaty' was signed.

All we had to do was bomb the dikes around Hanoi with B-52s ad the North would have collapsed.

The NV read the Dumbocrats and Johnson perfectly.

A President picking targets on the floor of the oval office.

Pathetic.

Tet '68 wasn't about scoring a political victory.  It was a one shot "win the war" total uprisong plan hatched by the guy who ran the insurgency in South Vietnam who thought Giap was too cautious and slow. VC were predominant because they were numerous than NVA forces in the South. To maintain element of surprise they couldnt exactly inilitrate numerous new divisions, especially when the infrastructure was already present, the VC. Giap deferred and sat out the whole thing for "health reasons" and allowed them to carry it out without him, knowing they would likely fail.

Didn't work, in actuality they did the very thing the US wished, they all came out of hiding where we could more easily killed them, resulting in the VC cadre being nearly wiped out and participating NVA units all combat ineffective, needing to leave South Vietnam for refit.

It was never planned to be a psychological victory, the Vietnamese commies only grabbed onto that narrative to save face after the American press used the offensive as justification to cut support. It was supposed to be a complete military victory.
