Did the North Vietnamese "set up" the Viet Cong?
Since the north planned on winning, was this a way to score a political victory against the US, as well as getting rid of the South Vietnamese based Viet Cong.
If there was any resistance after the takeover, the Cong had the potential for an experienced resistance force.

VC was either very gullible to believe the North Vietnamese Commie or VC had no choice but to believe. Without the support of NV commie who got the support from USSR and Chicoms, VC could not last long in South Vietnam.
Tet Offensive in Lunar New Year 1968 destroyed a significant force of VC. North Vietnamese Commie did not achieve militarily, but politically it affected the public opinion in US, and it went down hill from there. As the pressure of public opinion in US piled at Nixon Administration, 1972 Paris Accords struck between US, South Vietnam, North Vietnam, and VC to end the war. This Accords was the end of US involvement and also the end of South Vietnam.
As US forces withdrew, US also cut back on support as far as materials, guns, ammo,...were scaled back. North Vietnam with the support of Chicoms and USSR started to secretly moved more troops into South Vietnam.
3 years later, April 30, 1975, Republic of Vietnam surrendered.
As far as VC were concerned, their forces were merged into NVA. Leaders of VC did hold some official capacities but as important as they imagined.
