Went to a pain Dr ....he gives all new patients a urinalisys to make sure they are not drug seekers which I agree with however I just recieved my explanation of benefits and my insurance did not pay a dime so they billed me just under $10K? WTF?  I think this lab must be owned by Martin Schreli! Where should I start to fight this?

If your Dr was covered under insurance but you weren't asked or given a choice in what lab to send it to then it is also covered under insurance. It's a game they play. Dispute it with insurance. I usually give the bill to my HR person to do. I have this happen every time I have lab work done.

When it's settled I'll be surprised if your insurance paid the lab $20 for the test.

If you can't get the insurance to cover it like the post above suggests, your doctor probably has a cash rate that will be substantially more reasonable.

You'll be treated like a criminal through this entire process.

Exactly. My doc sent me to a pain management specialist, who made me get a $1000 piss test. Bill came back to me for $250. My doc said 'It's all smoke and mirrors.' 3 months later the bill came back: $35 or so.

Had the same problem a few years back, only it was like $8,000.  Turns out the lab had submitted all of the days claims to my plan.  Took some time to get squared away.

The drug testing industry is a huge ripoff. Yes, physicians need to monitor opioid compliance in patients. But the companies doing this charge massive amounts, in the hopes that some insurance companies or some gullible patients will pay the big bills. Most will not.

Call up the drug testing company. Tell them that your insurance won't pay any of it and that you can't afford it. They will knock off something like 95% or more.

(MD here. Not a pain doc, but I sit on our clinic's lab committee and I see this stupid game all the time).
