What am I in for by trying to secure an idea for a business name/business model?

Thanks,

IANAL, but in general a trademark does not protect an idea.

Depending on the details, it is possible that you might be looking for a patent instead.

But patents have plenty of pitfalls, especially if you do not have "deep pockets".

That said, if you have a really neat business name that you'd like to protect with a registered trademark, you can file an "intent to use" trademark application, which has very specific rules and timelines (and fees).

Design patent might be what you are looking for.
