Is there an overall legal length for an assault rifle, or is BATF more concerned with the length of the barrel and buttstock?  Does anyone know the legal lengths of these components?

OA length for any rifle under federal law is 26 inches minimum; nice if it's a little over so nobody splits hairs.  Barrel length is 16 inches minimum, measured from the business end to the face of the closed bolt (measured with a stick down the barrel).  State law may modify federal...here in the peoples republic, it's 30 inches minimum.  Check the nra legal page or maybe www.packing.org for exact requirements.
