How many magazines, grenades, tools, etc...does a Marine take into battle?

There is no "standard" it is all METT-T dependant. M16 bearers are issued 6 magazines, but tend to carry more if needed.  SAW gunners are suppose to only have 2 Ammo pouches, but always seem to carry more drums than they have places for and spread load their excess ammo to other within the fire team.  Grenadier/fire team leaders are normally the only ones that carry rounds for the M203, but in OOTW since they are a less than lethal platform they also spread load those rounds.   The current MOLLE gear only comes with pouches for 2 M67s, so any extra have to be carried somewhere else other than the LBV.  AT-4 are carried if the threat warrants it, but that ranges from the riflemen only to everyone carrying one.  On top of that it is not unusual to spread out some of the Company's mortar and Machine-gun ammo to everyone other than the radio operator, but the RTOs batteries are sometimes also spread loaded depending on how many he is carrying.

STLRN is absolutely correct.  METT-T is the term for Mission Enemy Terrain Troops and Time.  This is what dictates the load a Marine will carry.

John if you are looking for what you should carry, bring what you need no more no less.

Read The Soldiers Load and the Mobility of a Nation.  It is printed by the Marine Corps Association.  It gives some good insight.

I would probably carry 12-15 mags depending on the mission, plus extra ammo for myself and the MG. Grenades would also depend on the mission. Probably 2-6.

A Marine will carry as much freaking ammo and weapons he can without being too loaded down.

these guy are 100% right in my experience. why carry bandoleers of strippers when you can fill 4 more mags before you leave. most companies have footlockers full of mags. never seen a grunt with only 6
