RDX/Cyclonite can be fun & is the active ingredient in Comp B(used in arty shells) & C4.

RDX in the these forms; M112 1.25 block Demo, M118 Sheet Explosive (Flex).
As a side note: Comp B if I remember correctly is a mix of RDX and TNT. RDX is too shock-sensitive to be used as a straight explosive filler for Artillery Projo's. It's not a good thing when a projo detonates in the tube!!! |

not an explosive, but my favriote incendary compound is thermite, nothing cooks like that stuff. 4,500 degress F.

That's correct! 60% RDX + 40% TNT= Comp B aka Hexolite.

Not exactly related to this topic(but close). I have a farmer neighbor who is in his late 60's who tells of riding the bus to town to go to school and getting off at the hardware store to pick up a box of DYNAMITE for his dad who needed it to blast out some stumps. He then walked two blocks to school and put the dynamite in his locker and took it home with him at the end of the day on the same school bus. All he needed to make this all kosher was a note from his dad to the school and the hardware store. Damn, I grew up at the wrong time.

RDX (C-4, cyclonite, etc) is cool, but I think that PETN and HMX are cooler. If you really want cool explosives check out octonitrocubane and hexanitrobenzene. Also there are some amazing compositions of tetranitromethane and various fuels. Most fun has to be ammonium nitrate. Not the most powerful, but can be had for cents per pound so you just use more of it:-) Nothing thuds quite like AN. Ahhh, now I remember why I became as chemist!
