Our first clue was asking him if he would be watching the State of the Union. He stated he wasn't because he couldn't stand to look at the man. The long of the short was his man Gore had the election stolen from him. He was asking about a gun and when I questioned him about being a gun carrying liberal; his response was that the democrats had came to his door asking for his guns. He didn't know that Klinton had been impeached; He thinks when it comes out that Bush made millions on Enron his party will be vindicated. The Republicans have plunged the economy into a near depression, and welfare is a good program. BTW he is a union electrician and his wife works at a college.

I have read a lot things on this board.
I have learned recipes for Cordon blu. I have learned to appreciate fine, and not so fine, art. I have learned how to disassemble and re-assemble and AR-15, and practically any other firearm known to man here at this site. I have even learned rudimentary Latin. But the best advice I have ever heard just came from hielo. |

Not much difference it is? I work at Hanford with many union members. I see these guys at the gun shows and they have Bush stickers on their pickups. International Union Of Operating Engineers member. Guess what? I think their politics are for shit. I own a few guns, I hunt, I belong to several gun and/or hunting organizations, and vote republican. I am our steward and I dont hide my political beliefs when dealing with the union. If they dont like it, tough. The only reason I am in the union is that it is a requirement of my employment. I wish I had the schooling to do it another way but I don't. I really fail to understand why so many of you seem to be so hateful of us that are in unions. Whenever the topic comes up it seems like we are hated as bad as the Antis hate you. Does the fact that I make fair money in any way affect your quality of life? Should I not be allowed to have decent health care or retirement? For those of you who can do so good outside of a union, I commend you. Please don't think that because some of us are in a union that we follow the party line. In some areas it is the only way to make a living without a college education. I will never attain the quality of life many members here have but hey, I am making a living instead of leaching off the system. Lumpy(disapointed in some of my shooting brothers)223 |

BUT, you touched a nerve, in a most abrasive manner. I believe in the various things you listed, and I am knowledgeable enough of history to know unions played a major role in obtaining them--60 or so years ago. Then the unions were taken over by card-carrying communists and started moving the country to collectivism/statism/socialism to the detriment of all of us. Unions have outlived their usefulness to society. Most union members these days are government employees. If you wish to belong to one, more power to you, I have no problem with that. If you seriously believe the union is doing you a ton of good, then you are either delusional, a slackard/drunk, or other type who couldn't hold a job without the union protecting you. I've seen it. I hold a withdrawal card from the AFL-CIO from my high school grocery store job. I have held my present job for nearly 24 years, beginning at age 19, through my hard work, excellent work record, and making myself valuable to my company. It is a classic symbiosis that allows the company to be profitable, and me to hold a well-paying job with excellent benefits. BTW, my company making a profit does not (to me) mean they are exploiting the proletariat. LOL P.S.: If you wish to know my NRA membership status I would refer you to the tacked thread. You are attempting to make a silly analogy between NRA membership and union membership. Please be serious when attempting to address adults as you are making yourself look juvenile. |

I never had to rely on anyone to hold my job for me. Never been fired in my life. Never asked someone to get my job back. Never filed a complaint. Never counted on someone else to get my raise for me. Never filed for unemployment. Never been on welfare. Never turned down a job because I made more on the last one I had. Never went to a steward for anything. Never needed a steward for that matter. Is that guy working? Is he contributing to the bottom line? Never needed a herd to keep me safe. Never gave a dime to a liberal cause, pre-tax or otherwise. Dues are for gun clubs. Unions are the apex of the peter principle, sheeple style.

I will clarify my position.
I know many union members who are and were wonderful people. It is obvious from Boomer's attack that he is not familiar with the Steel, UAW, or other unions in the rust belt. I despise unions. A union member does not a unionist make but unions thrive because of unionists. I have seen the union hall rock with the fervor of a shaker meeting house and I have seen the factories close because it was simply cheaper to go out of business than cave to extortion. I am not opposed to people making a decent living have good working conditions and well, job security is really window dressing at best under any conditions. I note that in the place of the previous union facilities new owners opened non union shops and guess what, the workers got the same pay as before, and no union dues. They also got 401k stock ownership plans and a say in the operation. The union facilities are gone and peoples lives are ruined. I cannot speak to your experience but I will say that if I owned a manufacturing facility I would treat my employees fairly, as I always have. I would pay a competitive wage and would expect maximum performance encourage employees to join savings plans and provide the same health benefits to line workers and management. If that was not good enough and my employees felt they needed a union I would simply choose to go out of business and liquidate my assets. |

Now, now - not all us union folks are backwards Liberals...
Teamsters #665 - come from a mainly USW family. All of us are Libertarian in bent, mostly firearms owners (my mother likes swords and bows) and NONE of us are afraid to defend ourselves - because we know we're the only ones who are really ready to do it... Causes I advocate - Radical restructuring of welfare - change from a lifetime programme to a crutch, include trade school and make it a timed programme (eligible two years out of five, perhaps.) Abolition of the Federal Income Tax, replace with a National Retail Sales Tax (perhaps 5-7%.) Concomitant restructuring of the Federal Goverment to accomodate the reduced Federal intake. Unlimited concealed carry per Vermont, extended under "Privileges and Immunities" clause in the COnstitution. Ban of NFA34, 89 Ban, and the assorted later Crime Bills. Introduction of a comprehensive holistic health plan to help reduce or eliminate the dependence upon the pharmaceutical industry - at ALL ages. Elimination or full privatisation of Social Security. Elimination of the widespread use of the SSAN as an identifier. Tie in with above, run SS Programme as originally concieved (programme was to run for five years.) I have some others, but I need to flesh them all out... FFZ |

Hey MAC,
I make "high five" figures a year because I am valuable. Not because bubba over there said so. You see, the president of the company values my time, not my steward. The president signs the checks, not the steward. The president is watching the bottom line of the company. The steward is looking at his botom line. In the steward's eyes you fall in somewhere below that, no matter what he/she tells you. -elliott |

Steelworkers Union member here chiming in...
I guess the beauty of a union is all in the eye of the beholder... I am now unemployed because our union protected the lazy and the unqualified... I was laid-off last week, losing my job to another based SOLELY on length of employment... Didn't matter that I could run circles around this guy... Meant a few dollars an hour raise for my replacement, and unemployment compensation for me... What a great service these unions provide... Now the whole company is going down the tubes, thanks to all the old, lazy, union protected non-productive freeloaders... They are only there to put thier hours in & collect thier union protected paychecks... Good for the union, they will have successfully run another company into the ground... HOORAY FOR THE UNION !!!
