Police today said no charges are expected in the shooting death of a 28-year-old man Sunday at a south Topeka hotel.
Lt. John Sidwell identified the victim today as Anthony D. Hamilton, of Topeka. He said officers discovered Hamilton dead with a single gunshot wound after responding to a shooting at the Regency Inn, 3802 S.W. Topeka Blvd.
Police said 73-year-old Bobby T. Davis, of Hominy, Okla., was staying in Room 636 when he heard a knock on the door. Davis, who carried a small handgun, then opened the door with the chain lock in place.
Police said Hamilton asked to use the telephone, then forced his way into the room. Hamilton then grabbed Davis by the throat and demanded money, authorities said. As Hamilton attempted to hit the victim, Davis told police he fired one shot at Hamilton, who stumbled out of room and collapsed just outside the doorway.
Sidwell said detectives will forward reports to the district attorney's office, although no charges are expected to be filed.
