If you have a seven year old you will know the question.  Are all snow flakes different?  If so, why?  He is not buying the "because" or "that's the way it is".  Need a correct answer or one that sounds believable.

Ice crystals form in a totaly random pattern.

Well I do not have any kids (yet), but try this on for size and tell me if it works.  Please let me know since I will be in your shoes someday.

How bout this:
Explain a simple version of the Caous Theory.  Jeff Goldbloom talkes about it in the first Jurasic Park movie.
Since things around us are constantly changing... all be it just a little.  Example the direction and speed the wind blows... the amount of sunlight were are recieving... the his height since he is contantly growing just a little 24-7.  And snowflakes are so little and fragil they are effected by these changes more than you or he is.  There for, if we think of the temperature of the air and the blowing of the wind as a cookie cutter; that is constantly changing shape.  Then we see how we get different cookies every time.

How's that for a try.

Or you can just rent Jurrasic Park and let him learn while getting the HELL scared out of him.

If anyone else reads this. Please let me know what you think.

Sorry for the typos.

not randomly, geometrically.

very specific electrical static charges in the atmosphere, (witch are different in each milocule of air, and always changing) as well as all other variables determin the patern of the individual flake. odds of two being identical are about 1 in 54,864,184,864,867,454,515,645,616,556,146, or there abouts.

at least thats my theory, but i am no chaotition.

edited because i clicked the wrong area of the screen.........

If very specific things are constantly changing, doesn't that make it random?

Its past 9pm tell the kid to get in bed.

That is true the_survivalist,

We are all impressed by your knowledge.

Now how do you propose explaining that to a 7 year old?

I don't think they have tought him about the atmoshpere or molicules yet.

Just wondering

ARMALITE-FAN

I think: That if anything is changing in a unpredictable pattern it is random.  Regardless of whether the inputs are fixed or not.

Just my idea.

Good luck bybon.  Email me what happens.

As I said I will need to know if it works someday.

Thanks

How about 5.4864184864867454515645616556146x10^31? I bet he won't ask any more questions about snowflakes after you explain scientific notation to him LOL

I wish I could find the web site again, but someone used a huge government grant to do the research about no two snow flakes being the same.

Turns out, that it happens. More often than you think.

Guzzler, I remember that.  It wound up that there are only a limited number of shapes snowflakes will form.
