Which band invented heavy metal as we know it today?

Deep Purple,Black Sabbath or Uriah Heep?

Actually, Led Zeppelin is credited with being the official inventor of the genre, but I would lean towards Blue Cheer. When I saw them in 1967, they were very metal-like, even back then.

I don't think one band could be considered the "inventor" of metal. There are tons of bands you could list.

Tons of bands?
Not that many bands in that time period had the crunchy guitar sound of Black Sabbath,or the screaming lyrics of Deep Purple.

They were pioneers of that sound.

I guess it's more of an opinion question.

How far back you talking about, even Ozzy will tell you he listened to "Yes" and bands like that. Even though Yes isn't considered metal. I think "metal" started in the late 70's and early 80's with bands like Van Halen and Iron Maiden, I never did like Zep, Black Sab, Iron Butterfly or any of those.

It was the band "Judas Priest" that coined the heavy metal genre of music. Or was it Cap'n Geech & The Shrimp Shack Shooters?? I love Deep Purple, Rainbow (Blackmore's band after the first of many breakup's with DP)and anything else "heavy metal"!!

I'd have to say that there wasn't one band that pioneered heavy metal, but that it's rather an amalgamation of many different bands' styles. Who are some of the bands I'd include as "metal pioneers"? Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Zeppelin, BOC, Judas Priest, Ted Nugent & The Amboy Dukes, Rush....the list can go on and on.

Interesting question.

I believe the phrase "heavy metal" was coined by Steppenwolf in 1968, on the classic "Born to be Wild"

Led Zep I, was also in 1968.

Yes first album was in 1969.

Cream, while having earlier recordings, released "Sunshine of Your Love" in 1967.

Jim Hendrix "Hey Joe", 1966.

Hard to pin a crown on any of these, but my vote would be for Jimi.

Zepplin...but,it came to the late 70's and early 80's to "define" HEAVY metal...AC/DC and Van Halen come to mind...RUSH, Journey, Ozzy, Styx, AEROSMITH,Fleetwood Mac...did'nt think the "Glam" bands qualified...too much make-up to be considered rock and roll.

Black Sabbath's debut was the first real metal record. The first few DP lps were just hippie rock until the In Rock album. Uriah Heap were kind of hit and miss with their material, though Bird of Prey is a great heavy tune. I never really considered LZ metal, too bluesy and eh, folk, for lack of a better word. Though LZ was probably the inspiration for HM as a concept. And yeah, Blue Cheer is in there somewhere.

Stuffs like Pink Floyd, Journey and Fleetwood Mac are not HM (maybe if you have a mullet [:D]). Just hard rock, and then PF is barely that most of the time after DSotM.

I'd throw The Velvet Underground (aka Lou Reed and John Cale), 1964 ish, into the mix. Lots more distortion and dark lyrics than other bands in that era.

Oh lord.

Steppenwolf has long been thought of as inventing both the term 'Heavy Metal' as well as the genre.

Their debut single "Born To Be Wild" inculded the first use of the term. It hit #2 on July 20, 1968 after 12 weeks on the Billboard Hot-100 chart.

As for who I think invented it? Nektar, hands down.

Yardbirds, Cream, Animals, Sabbath, Deep Purple all were pushing the limits and pre-date this side of the pond's Aerosmith, Rush, Journey, Ted Nugent etc. by a year or more. Jimi Hendrix was a pioneer too.

Yes, Genesis and Pink Floyd were more of their own "art rock". Zappa was, well just Zappa!

i juat cant think of zepplin as metal, im sorry, but im gonna say Priest, then motorhead to bring things up to speed, the rest is history. that other stuff just isnt fast/harsh enough.

Bands like Led Zeppelin, Uriah Heep and Deep Purple aren't what I consider heavy metal bands at any time in their careers. They are hard rock bands like Van Halen and Ted Nugent. The first heavy metal band plainly had to be Black Sabbath, who may of had influences from earlier rock and blues bands, but Sabbath's music was original in it's own way with their dark and evil sounding rhythms and lead the way to heavy metal bands like Judas Priest and Iron Maiden, later evolving into speed and thrash metal bands like Metallica and Megadeth during the 80s and 90s. You also had the metal hair-bands like Poison and Warrant, but to me, those bands were more glamour rock than metal
I don't know if any new band today can be labeled as "heavy metal". Today you have bands like Godsmack, Staind, Rob Zombie, Tool and Disturbed which are a combo of metal, hard rock and grunge.

I don't know the "official" answer, but as for me personally? No question about it. True "Metal" was started by Black Sabbath.
