For protection, of course.

No. Only on 9/11 really? That surprises me, considering the state of the world nowadays. |
|
i would imagine yes- everywhere.
wached one chase down a cessna that wandered in toward AF1 was funny seeing the jet do S-curves to go slow enough... even launched some flares to get their attention. |
|
How would they keep up on a long overseas trip?
Stage refueling tankers for the fighters every 1500 miles or so, as in a deployment? I guess it's possible. |
|
I also think that the presidential limo is the most heavily armored vehicle in the world. They just showed him getting into it in Prague, and I swear the doors are a foot thick.

Offically, no.
Unoffically there is a squad of cloaked fighters just waiting for the go word. |
|
Specific provisions of protecting the President, especially if it involves the military, are strictly classified. In some instances, military protection such as fighter escort may be "higher profile" and at other times, not so obvious... This being an UNCLASSIFIED Forum... you won't ever hear the official answer.

Ive seen the same thing when the prsident was at Central Command , a small plane was going towards where the president was at , and they had a fully loaded F-16 running circles around him . they steered him the other way . less than 1000 feet off the ground . this was a little after sept. 11th . one of the coolest things I have ever seen in the sky. |
|
I saw Airforce One take off from Waco for the last time with President Bush.
I did not see any fighters but I did see a Blackhawk hovering in the distance. That plane was amazing for a 747. It took off and gear up, level off for a second, then climbed out like a fighter and off into the wild blue. |

Ive seen AF1 land 3 times, and each time the sound of unseen jets could be heard in the skies circling the city...They stayed high enough and far enough to not be intrusive, but they were there.....

No, unless the state department declares the area 'hostile to Americans' I kid you not.
ETA: all the flights to the Soviet Union during the cold war didn't have them either. Talk about some balls. |

eagles are some beautiful birds but id love to see AF1 flanked by some raptors

Only because half of an city seen it, I'll share a cool story. Back in the day I worked for a municipality, which was The City of Kettering Parks Department, located outside Dayton Ohio. During Bush 41's reelection campaign against Clinton he came to "Fraze Pavilion", which is an amphitheater our Park District operated. Said amphitheater could not hold helicopters. So they intended to land at the next closest park, which was "Delco (GM) Park" at a 100 acre's plus of sports fields. But before doing the official flight with the President on board, they did a dry run from WPAFB where Air Force One had landed.
I was at Delco Park at that time installing fence for one of our ball diamond's. Glancing up, I seen a "large" group of Helicopters coming our way from the direction of WPAFB. Lo and behold, and unannounced to our Dept. for obvious reasons, that armada flared and landed right in our park. I'll just say there were multiple CH-53's, multiple CH-46's, and multiple likenesses of "Marine 1". And it was the coolest shit I had ever seen up until that time. Because I went from putting in fence in front of the dugout on the first base line, to an armada of big ass helicopters landing all around me in a span of maybe thirty seconds. With one of the CH-53's landing on the field I was working on, right at second base beside me ("Diamond Dry" and rotor wash do not mix)! Trust me, it as was cool as hell. So what is the moral of that story? It is that if the POTUS has that much "muscle" accompanying Marine 1, just to drive to a park in Small Town America, what do you think they have accompanying Air Force 1 going to another country? |

Are you sure that wasn't just other traffic being held while AF1 lands? They put the arrivals into holding patterns until the president is off and away from the airport. |

If AF1 has a fighter escort, why would that be classified? I mean, it's not classified that the Secret Service carries guns, is it?

Sometimes it does. Sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes AF1 doesn't even have the president because the president is in an unidentified aircraft like a Gulfstream. It really depends on various situations and where it's flying.
