Hey there,

I saw AR15Fan had mentioned that Orange County CA was readily issuing CCW Permits.....Do I have reside in Orange County or just be CA resident?  AR15Fan if you are out there can you shed some light on this for me?.....shoot me an e-mail if you prefer than answering here...I reside in San Diego County and CCW here is not very likely.....

Thanks and take care all,

Steve

The rule on issuing CCW permits is that it must be approved by the CLEO of the jurisdiction you live in.  In the case of Orange County, it is the Sheriff.  BTW, "readily issuing" is a relative term.  You are still expected to provide a legitimate reason for needing a CCW.  However, one of the legitimate reasons is that you are a competition shooter.

I contacted Steven Teeters of the CADOJFD with this same question and the answer was that you have to be a qualified resident of the county in question. Also if you live in an incorporated city then the police department may issue you a CCW.

The California DOJ has as it's head one of the biggest anti's that ever hit a major CA state office.  So I would base decisions on the opinion of a qualified gun law attorney, rather than the ones coming from this elected official's staff.

This is similar to the guys who think that because ATF writes their own interpretation, that that settles the law.

Umm, ya I agree with you that our AG is a serious anti but a Qualified gun attorney will tell you the same thing that I wrote in my post.
A sheriff of a county may issue you a CCW within reason as a Police Department Head can issue you a CCW when in an incorporated city.

So what's your point? That we have an Anti gun Attorney General appointed by a Democratic Government?

When I lived in OC and subscribed to it, Western Outdoor News ran a classified ad from some attorney who had a 90% success rate in getting people licensed to carry in OC. It might be worth checking out.

Hmmmmm...interesting topic.

I note a certain mindset here from the residents of the lovely State of Confusion.

One word keeps up a recurring drumbeat..."may - may - may".  The CLEO "MAY" issue, based upon this or that [perceived] need, on the good (and expensive) offices of some bottom feeding lawyer, OR...just because the requester is a (1) politician, (2) liberal big shot, (3) a Hassidic diamond merchant plying his dangerous trade in downtown LA, (4) a close personal pal of the CLEO (That's how my father-in-law did it in San Bernardino County for years.), (5) a rapper who just wants to protect himself from his buds...OR finally, (6) a Hollywood superstar.

I doubt that many Joe Sixpacks EVER get a CCW in California.  I certainly never could.

Just to refresh the [painful] memories of those who I left behind when I moved from CA to the Commonwealth in '96, the operative word in MY state is "SHALL" issue, not "MAY" issue.

Here's an unpleasant culture shock:  When I travel back to La La Land, which is often, I feel REAL naked.  On one trip last year, two very nasty looking, tatted up uglies were making evil eyes on my person...and at my age, one does NOT return that glance from gangsters, whom these dudes clearly were.  My first thought was to slap the place on my person where I normally have my pistol.  Then it hit me...IDIOT!  You're not at home...you're in La La Land.  NO GUN here dude!  I just pointed the car in the other direction and eased away.  Made me feel real hinky though.

I am truly sorry for you guys & gals.  Socialism is a bitch. I hope you can change the laws...but it isn't going to be easy.

Is that one reason why middle class whites are fleeing the state at a rate of 100,000/year...or is that a totally bogus number?

LWilde:

My wife and I are two of the middle-class whites that fled the state in 2000. Well, my wife is actually a nice, warm caramelly tan. Kind of a cafe au lait color, really...

Anyway. I grew up in Pennsylvania, a shall-issue state, and after returning stateside from Okinawa, I was stationed in Arizona, a shall-issue state. When I EAS'd in 1996, there wasn't a lot of debate about where we were gonna live: The California girl wanted to go home. It took me four years to get her to Texas, but the funny thing is how easy it was to actually make it happen. I just called a realtor out here that I found on the internet and had her send me listings of houses in the price range of our place out in Cali. Schwing!!

I don't miss anything about California except In 'n Out Burger and Alberto's carne asada burritos. I'll get over it.

That's a hoot!  We did the same thing when I retired in 1992.  Momma wanted to stay in CA so I took a job in Camarillo.  Then, I did the same thing when I got the job offer in Virginia!  I had a friend living here whom I had served with at a DESRON in San Diego.  He sent me some real estate stuff and his boss sent me a fantastic job offer and when the Missus saw the cost of land & homes here...and the new salary numbers...as you said:  SCHWINNNGGG!!!

We miss In-And-Out burgers too...and El Pollo Loco.  In fact, I've been considering opening up a franchise here.  I think it would do well.  We also miss Vince's spaghetti in Ontario and Upland...where we grew up (Chaffey HS for her, Upland HS, Chaffey JC and CSUSB for me.).  Having said that, we're not that far into withdrawl since I travel to La La Land about six times a year and La Jefa goes with me most trips.

LWilde, things have changed a little since you lived here. San Bernadino County is a "will issue" county and the easiest to obtain a CCW. Pro-CCW sheriffs in Orange, Alameda, Napa, Tehama, Amador, San Bernadino, Riverside, and rural counties to the north and east issue CCWs after you jump through a few hoops. No, it's not statewide but grass roots have been working to get pro-CCW sheriffs elected.

The only state where you DON'T have to jump through hoops is Vermont. There are alot of people in CA who get Utah, Arizona, or Florida non-resident CCWs (Utah has the most reciprocity) to carry in other states, but California doesn't honor non-resident CCWs, as you noted.

I don't see things changing on a state level, but on a county level there's promise. I think our best bet would be to get a national CCW reciprocity law passed where permits would be like driver's licenses and be recognized in all states, then Utah CCWs would be good to go in CA.

Bear,

Do the Libs know what's afoot out there?

Sounds like a dangerous counter-revolution to me.  That could get you guys all a stretch in the Lubyanka!

Seriously, that does sound good.  Does the CA DOJ have a lot to say about this?  How hard are the "hoops" to pass?  Here in the Commonwealth, I go down to the County Seat, plunk down my $50 show my VDL, my DD 214 and viola, license on the way!  That's not much in the way of hoops.

Yes, a national CCW system would be great...but I doubt that is in the cards.  Just think of the fun the Libs and their pals in the media would have with that idea.  All of the major urban areas out here are no carry or no possession at all...DC...NYC...Philly.  All of us know that in that case, only the perps and pols are packing.  Geez...I can see Matt Lauer and Perky Katie now showing their outrage over that one.
