We have walked through Afghanistan like Patton for a dance in about a month now. The Russian spent how many years getting nowhere against them. Are we that superior over the Russians? The Russians dumped biological weapons and basically crop dusted them with nasty shit for years.

We haven't fought the Mujahedeen, only the Taliban. It's the difference between fighting .01% of the country, and fighting 99% of the country. Think about it. And, we are good. Let's not get over-C, though.

We were backing Bin Laden back then when he was a freedom fighter against the Russians.

The differences, as I pointed out before the campaign began, are that we have popular support, whereas the Soviets did not, and that we are NOT trying to maintain control over the country. We simply wanted to topple the Taliban and get Al Quaida. Simple goals, if not necessarily easy ones, and most importantly clear ones. The Soviets fell into the same trap we did in Vietnam---trying to prop up an incredibly unpopular, corrupt puppet government while fighting a guerilla force with popular support and MOST IMPORTANTLY, support from outside nations. There was never really any danger of a Soviet-style defeat here, because our goals were never the same as theirs. Our military IS that good, however, WHEN and only when they are given 1) a clear goal and 2) the means to achieve it. I think that 20-30 years from now, they will be using the war in Afghanistan as a textbook example of how special operations should be used in wartime.
