Attorney General John Ashcroft (news - web sites) is considering a plan to relax restrictions on the F.B.I.'s spying on religious and political organizations.

WASHINGTON, Nov. 30
Attorney General John Ashcroft is considering a plan to relax restrictions on the F.B.I.'s spying on religious and political organizations in the United States, senior government officials said today.

The proposal would loosen one of the most fundamental restrictions on the conduct of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and would be another step by the Bush administration to modify civil-liberties protections as a means of defending the country against terrorists, the senior officials said.

The attorney general's surveillance guidelines were imposed on the F.B.I. in the 1970's after the death of J. Edgar Hoover and the disclosures that the F.B.I. had run a widespread domestic surveillance program, called Cointelpro, to monitor antiwar militants, the Ku Klux Klan, the Black Panthers and the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., among others, while Mr. Hoover was director.

Woo hoo! Things are just getting better and better! Just remember as a bonus with these cointelpro operations, there will always be government agent provocateurs to coax along groups to commit illegal acts. Kind of like what happened to Randy Weaver, only this time on a larger scale and with fed encouragement.

In 1999 Reno was supporting the FBI restructuring for the purposes of cointelpro operations, but when the the republicans found out they were screaming bloody murder. Now the silence is deafening.

The American people are being sold out. But What did every one expect??
Every day we are being sold out by the professional politician, yet we DO NOTHING to change it, for to do so would be "treason".
The Founding Fathers must be spinning in their graves.

I guess I am of the prejudice that they were doing it all along, its just that now they are doing it so much, they've hired more staff that is not maybe so secretive and they're leaving a bigger footprint. Maybe the charade of obeying the laws that the people have put on government has become too tiresome.

HEEeeeeyyyy, "Modifying  civil-liberty protections" sounds like the new york times has got a little bit of that nazi-speak down pretty good. that's gotta be one of the best terms I've heard yet. What was it you all called the new york times before? a fairly..uh.."conservative" I think the word was, paper. Oh sorry I was about to start bitching again myself, I guess I need to kick myself and remember that "these are different times".
