I will be out of commission for a week or so.  My dad, who is the world's most zealous rock fisherman, died yesterday morning in a boating accident. He gets up at 4:30 almost every morning (old fighter pilot habit) and launches at Oregon Inlet, Nags Head, NC every morning.  We have a hurricane offshore and rough seas and, evidently, he was hit by a rogue wave in the inlet and hit his head on the boat.  I got a call yesterday from mom that he was missing.  The Coast Guard (great group of SAR guys down here BTW) found him around 6pm last night (no sign of his boat) and helo-transported him to
a hospital.  I was the first to get there and was told that he was basically gone.  There was nothing anyone could do and, evidently, he died that morning hours before they actually found him.

Dad was my hero.  He was THE most decorated fixed wing Marine aviator to come out of Viet Nam (flew 320 combat missions; was in country from Feb. 67 to March 68 and recieved everything from the Dist. Flying Cross to the Veitnam Service Medal and many others).  He drove an F-8 Crusader and was loved by the grunts on the ground that he protected.  He was there during Tet and did an awful lot of good.  In retirement, he enjoyed fishing for rock, EVERY DAY, and leaves behind his wife and three children, including me.  He loved the site and often logged on to view various diatribes launched by yours truly.  He owned an AR and was an avid supporter of the RKBA.  I loved him very much and he will be missed by so
many, including my sister's 2 year old daughter whom he chronically spoiled [:)].

I just wanted to share this with you and the other guys as well as the ar15.com members.  I'll be back soon.  Take care.

Steve

Four weeks ago to the day, I was driving like a madman trying to see my father before he died.

I didn't make it.

My condolences.

Steve, I'm very sorry for your loss. Your dad sounds like a man I would really have liked to meet, have a drink with and listen to stories from for hours.

Take care of yourself and your family. You will be in our thoughts and prayers.

Steve,

What a shock.  Having suddenly lost my own dad quite a while back, I have some idea, and my thoughts & prayers are with you and your family.  Thank you for letting us all know.
Sometimes we have to just keep putting one foot in front of another, sometimes we have to just stop and let it go.

Steve,  I'm sorry for your loss.  I have a favorite quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson...

How do you measure success? To laugh often, and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a redeemed social condition, or a job well done; to know even one other life has breathed because you lived this is to have succeeded.

Sounds like you father was one hell of a successful guy.

Steve:

My condolences to you and your family.  Sounds like your father was a great guy!  I've been struggling with a similar situation (my father has a terminal disease and won't be with us for too much longer, we're afraid), so I can imagine how devastated you must feel.

No matter what your religious beliefs are, you can rest assured that he's in a better place now...

Losing your father sometimes seems like losing your wisdom and strength.  May our Heavenly Father comfort you & yours over this great loss.  We will fire a salute for him here tomorrow.  He lived to see his children succeed, and to spoil his grandchildren.  May God be with you in the days ahead.  EW

Steve, sorry to hear of your loss, but I'm glad that you gave us a small peak at what your father did with his life for himself, his family and his country.

You should be proud of him as I know you are, and be thankful that you are here because of him.  Not all vets from foreign wars were lucky enough to come home to their family and start life all over again and enjoy the fruits of their hard labor.

God Bless,
Doug

You know I hear there is one swingin FIGHTER BAR down on the other side of where they keep the Marines . Its right after you enter the front gates and turn RIGHT down by where you see the Marine Aviators fighting the Airforce Pilots. Just follow the Arcangel he will take him there.... I am sure that he will be in the Best of Company. And Tell him to say hello to My GrandFathers'; they will be somewhere in that Crowd.

Ahmen..
