A group of US Marines of the 15th MEU (Marine Expeditionary Unity) move out to take a position in the desert outside the Marines' forward base in southern Afghanistan, November 29, 2001. The build-up of forces on the ground at the desert airstrip continued all night, and C17 cargo aircraft were used for the first time to bring in heavy logistics vehicles and a team of U.S. Navy 'Seabees'. U.S. Marine Michael Sean Leo, left, from Diamondbar, Calif., and Lance Cpl. Ajmal Achekzai from Salt Lake City, Utah, raise the U.S. flag on the U.S. Marine forward base in southern Afghanistan, early Thursday, Nov. 29, 2001. The base is within striking distance of the Taliban stronghold of Kandahar. Achekzai was born in Afghanistan and left the country after the Soviet invasion. He is working with the command on the base as a Farsi and Pashto translator. He said "I'm coming back home... I get chills putting this flag up." (AP Photo/Jim Hollander, POOL)

I hope they don't hump all that gear on patrol.

What missile system is the second guy in from the left carrying?

Glo
That is the Mk153 SMAW, it a MD produced copy of the Isreali B300 bunker buster.  It is more of a recoiless rocket launcher and not a missle.

does the smaw still have the 9mm barrel on the side? If i remember it fires tracers so you could get a fix on the bunker you wanted to take out. I got to fire one in 1984 thanks to usmc.

Yes there still is a ballistically matched 9mm spotting rifle on the weapon.

Do Marines pack US flags in their gear EVERYWHERE they go?  Do they issue one with every M16? [;)]

SURIBACHI SYNDROME![8D]

Just kidding, good hunting.

I see that the Marines are carrying their gas masks.  I wonder what sort of intelligence they have regarding possible chemical or biological attacks.

They brought CS with them to gas tunnels and also for possible food riots later when we have to start feeding all the refugees.

If they thought they had a real threat they would have full MOPP gear like in Desert Storm.

Course they also carried gas masks through every landing and every battle they fought in WWII, even though the Japanese only ever used gas against the Chinese- and then only before 1941.

I'll bet there were a lot of gas masks left on the beach at Iwo Jima.  Having to scramble from one covered position to another gives you a new perspective on which gear is and isn't "essential". [:|]

Yes they did leave gas masks all over the beach at Iwo. Just look for all the small dark spots lying around in the photos.

The Army made everyone in combat carry gas masks in every theater througout the war.  But as soon as they got the chance they tossed them.

The US military never faced a gas attack in the entire war on any theater.  Yet even though we purchased several MILLION gas masks during the war we still had almost NONE in stock when Korea broke out in 1950 and had to buy millions more from new!

The Field protective mask is standard issue equipment regardless of the threat level. We(they) carry them not only for protection against what the enemy sends at them but because what they might send at the enemy such as clearing buildings/bunkers/caves, etc. with CS/CN gas for example.

Has the US military actually employed riot control agents (CS & CN) in the field since the Vietnam War?
