Can somebody explain the point of zero tolerance?

Certainly.  It's to relieve from the public school administration A) any need to actually think, B) any need to take responsibility for their actions.  "It's the RULE!  I can't do anything about it because it's the RULE!"

We've really seen some ridiculous treatment of kids come out of this thinking. I would also ban news coverage of this stuff too.Last year a girl was thrown out of school for having aspirin in her purse, which is a drug, and the school was allowed to search anything on her person without a warrant based on the consent she gave by attending.Bullshit.

Kids have to deal with Zero Tolerance and now adults will have to deal with Project Exile. It is all for your own good.

Zero tolerance = zero common sense. An innocent G.I. Joe was detained because of it. Oh yeah, and a normal kid was expelled from school.[whacko]

Ironically, I am told the "It's the rule!" approach is a preferred management technique.  The reasons are similar to what you explained.  The manager doesn't have to explain the intelligence or wisdom of a particular rule.  He will just send the employee up the chain, all of which will give him the same "It's the rule!" answer.
This sounds like a good way to ruin a company, or any organization.  Everybody voluntarily turns themselves into mindless robots, and nobody thinks for themselves about the best way to do things.

It's a great way to ruin a country, too.  See thread "Alexis de Tocqueville called it" http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?id=71422
