I know "The Duke" is one tough S.O.B.

But I just watched Hearbreak Ridge(for like the 100th time).

Clint Eastwood wins,hands down.

I like Clint Eastwood, both his movies and he seems like a nice enough guy off screen. I just think that John Wayne would whoop his ass like a red headed step child and he would make Clint like it.....

John Wayne bites.  He never seemed tough to me at all.  Clint, however, is a badass... plus he had more memorable lines.

AR50troll, I dunno how your mirror installation trauma factors into your opinion, but I do agree with your conclusion.

The Duke didn't make "The Bridges of Madison County."  Score one for him.

Clint's real name isn't "Marion Michael Morrison."  Score one for Clint.  What is Clint's name anyway?

Re badass, I guess the qualified answer is I dunno.

It's a quote from the movie Repo Man with Emilo Estevez.  A group of repo men get in a pissing match over JW.  Funny shit.

Whatever the Duke's real name or alleged sexual proclivities were, the fact remains: he dodged the draft in WW2 to stay home and concentrate on his career, while Jimmy Stewart, George Murphy, Robert Montgomery and others from Hollywood actually saw combat.

Clint's attitude towd's firearms? Not sure, but he did at least say this:

"At Waco, was there really an urgency to get those people out of the
compound at that particular time?  Was the press going to make it look
heroic for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms?  At Ruby
Ridge, there was one guy in a cabin at the top of the mountain.  Was
it necessary for federal agents to go up there and shoot a 14-year-old
in the back and shoot a woman with a child in her arms? What kind of
mentality does that?"

Clint Eastwood
Parade Magazine, January 12, 1997

Clint wins, hands down.

While I agree with everything you said, and regardless of who believes what and what this other person did, you are still missing the point. This is an ass kicking contest and there is no way in hell Clint could hold a candle to the Duke when the cards are down.

Thus, John Wayne kicks Clint Eastwoods ass.

If you're talkin in a real life ass wipin The Duke would clean up Clint but good. As far as movies go I don't think you can compare. The Duke made movies in a more innocent time. They just didn't have the violence and mayhem. What about good ole Fee Parker? That was one big Sumbitch.

This is not the first time this thread came up...

And Clint Eastwood still sucks next to the DUKE!

John Wayne was a better actor, better American and bigger baddass than Clint could even dream of being.

Those of you who can call John Wayne a fag... put down the crack pipe.  He'd whip your ass, too.

He was in his mid 20's and, as has already been stated here, he skipped the draft in order to concentrate on his career.  Besides, Jimmy Stewart and others were older.  I saw the same bio and have read others.  Why do all the apologists for JW make excuses for him and why does everyone think that he is so tough based on movie parts?  I like his movies but he is not necessarily a tough guy because he portrays one.  Not comparing him to them, look at all the actors that portray gun advocates who, in reality, are not.  What you see on the screen means absolutely zip!

I have a weakness for old Clint Eastwood westerns and Dirty Harry movies.  I also like Kelly's Heroes for some unknown reason.  Maybe it is Oddball?  None of his newer stuff is any good except "Unforgiven."

Never liked John Wayne though--too much Mom & Apple Pie bullshit with him.  Clint represented all that was manly and individual.  No candy coating.  I question some of Dirty Harry's police tactics, but I guess that was the point--you can't be a cop and not be a brute, it doesn't work that way.

John Wayne was a true American hero!! He did not do any spaghetti westerns. He was also born in 1907, you brainiacs will have to get out your calculators to figure out how old he was during WWII. As far as being a tough guy, even at the ripe old age in this pic, he could still kick Eastwoods ass & probably all of you J.W. flamers as well!!

Jimmy Stewart told a story on the Tonight Show years ago..... I paraphrase.

He went to a "snooty" hotel in Spain in the late 40's. When the desk clerk found out Stewart was an actor the refused to give him a room. Stewart said actors were not held in high regard in those days.

Stewart said he saw a US Army officer in the lobby of the hotel, going up to his room. Stewart pulled out his Army (Air Force?) ID, he told the desk clerk if it helped he could rent the room to Col. James Stewart for the week. Stewart said he got the room.

IIRC Stewart was a B-17 pilot. Yes those other guys are tougher whatever that means. But Stewart was an American to be proud of. Speaking of the Tonight Show Ed McMahon was a WWII USMC fighter ace, earned some medals too.
