on the firing order for a 1990 Ford Escort LX.
It would save me some time if I knew the which
way the rotor turns too - CW/CCW.

I can't tell you for sure, but I'm almost positive it's counter clockwise. Anyway, this is probably no help but it'll put it back up top for you.

If its a TBI its 1342 and CCW  ( VIN CODE 9 )

If it is FI-HP its 1342 ( VIN J ) and the spark box is;

F  4  3

One more stupid question:  CW/CCW as viewed from
the driver's side of the vehicle, facing the
distributor cap, right?

If you are standing with your knees against the front bumber... actually it shouldn't matter for CW or CCW  only the numbers would look different.  the only time CW or CCW would change is if you were looking from the bottom up
