People have always complained the GD is nothing but triviality in the form of an internet soap opera. It wasn't true before but now it is.

If someone has a purely technical question they can go to the "Build Your Own" or "Reloading" forums. But the complete absence of "gun talk" in the GD is a mistake in my opinion.

The Firearm related GD just doesn't get the traffic. As a result fewer people benefit from or offer advice. I think the two GDs should be reunified as one. I understand why it was done, but in hindsight, I think things were better before.

Anyone else feel this way?

Steyr, the reason that GD was split up into two separate forums was to allow those folks who want to come to a firearms board to actually be able to read about and discuss firearms without havin to be forced to wade through a ton of "Babe of the Day" and "Which toilet paper is better" topics.  Believe it or not, there are actually some folks who come here to discuss firearms. [:O]  This was done as an attempt to satisfy everyone. The other option that was discussed was dropping GD altogether. That option is starting to look better all the time.

I asked my gf if 'general discussion' between us often involves gun topics - she replied 'All the time, and politics, that's it!  Guns, politics, guns, politics... [etc]'

The day that happens will be the day this board stops being the place I come to first on the internet.  In fact, I doubt I would come here unless I had a specific question.  Not that I have a lot to offer as some here do.  But I feel that the information stream would slow to a trickle if general discussion was taken away.

Actually that is part of the problem. We don't want to be in a gun ONLY forum either. We can go anywhere on the net for that. And some of us won't change forums to post a ordinary gun question so it will just go unanswered.

Don has a point about people not wanting to wade through the drama to find out "Who has ARs for less than $200.00?" But fewer people are now gonna see that question. Maybe a good thing.

If someone has a serious technical firearm question we have forums for that. But the former GD was kinda like the range clubhouse. We talked guns, religion and politics. And we had girlie pics on the wall. All the things that you are not supposed to do these days.

We were the anti PC hit squad and we loved it. This is why we react so much to change. We truly LOVE the AR15 GD. It is one of the only places like it on the net.

Wow, this is a rather remarkable topic coming from a person that is generally more interested in posting porn than having firearms discussions...  and spends several days contemplating what post #3000 should be!

Yet again 2 more reasons why post counts and "Babe of the Day" type threads should NOT be allowed!

Could this forum be made to contain topics from the firearms forum as well?  But leave the firearms forum as is.

SteyrAug, I'm totally with you on this one. I don't understand why so people had so much of a problem "wading" through Babe of the Day topics and such to get to the firearms related topics.

It seemed to me that if as a member surfing the site, and all you wanted was firearms discussion, than you could easily just visit the forums that you were interested in (ammunition, tactics, magazines, etc.).

But if you wanted a little of both, or needed a quick response, or had a general firearm topic worth posting, that the GD forum was the way to go. I loved having the political stuff mixed in with the gun stuff.

Sadly, that's not the case anymore. I think it's a mistake. This GD has always been the biggest reason I came here because I could get good info quick. As well as shoot the shit, talk politics, and check out pictures of peoples dogs and trucks!

I for one hope they get reunited again. Soon.

I agree with Steyr on this.  I liked it better as one big "GENERAL DISCUSSION"

I didn't think there was anything wrong with the board.

Seperating the two forums is NO sense of security from a freaked out scat poster.

"Porn" anti?  I'd hardly call pictures of the female body "porn"

It's pretty easy to know from the title what "Babe of the day" means.  I dont think that really surprised any grannies.

Sheesh.

I, as I suspect many others do, spend 90% of my time in the GD. The broad spectrum of topics, humor, ideas and cathartic rants tabled here for discussion cannot be matched anywhere else. It is just damn good reading! Nor can we ignore the empathy, peer support and occasionally brutally honest differences of opinion. This forum provides a rare insight few of us will ever be able to find in any other relationship. While firearms topics are still a staple of the general discussion, this topic would be unwelcome, awkward and entirely out of place in the general firearms discussion forum.

Besides, if I started hanging out in a strictly Firearms forum again, I couldn't help but start thinking about spending "lots-o-money" on this accessory or that new rifle, etc. Surprisingly enough, I don't need as much help with that! Do you really want my kids to starve?

I came to this forum for information about firearms, specificaly the AR15. I found what I needed, bought an LEGP(my first AR),and probably would have went happily on my way(In fact I spent most of my in the LEGP discussion).
Except for one thing... I found a number of like minded individuals hangin' out talking about things that interested me, and some that didnt.
Just bullshit and stuff, AND firearms. Stuff I like to hear. And not. I can sort it out. I dont the site to do that.
This GD has gotten a bit lame since the separation, if you ask me.

SteyrAUG, who brought you...

Guns Of WWI
Guns Of WWII
Your Basic Black Rifle Collection
More Guns from The SteyrAUG Collection
etc.
etc.

For anyone to suggest all I bring is girlie pics is mistaken. I actually posted very few "babe" topics. Certainly less than 10. It just happened BOTD was MASSIVE and enormously popular. But that said my "firearm related" topics compared to "non firearms related" topics is easily 10 to one.

The MAJORITY of my post count is actually answering questions of other members.

We CANNOT live without pointless BS. Some of this crap is way too funny and a big part of the reason many of us come here. Pondering which firearm Jesus would carry is important. And it will probably be on the mid term.

2) number of posts
- The GD fills up faster than a porn star at a gang bang... we're talking posting heaven... Those with serious issues or questions find their posts off the first page or two in a matter of minutes. Some of us don't even check posts older than 4-5 days if they aren't things we're involved in!!!
View Quote

This is the OTHER reason we come here. It MOVES. All the other boards are DEAD. And the GD is slow as a result of the separation. The firearm questions in that forum are still on page one but many are not really being answered at all. In the old GD you got about 30 answers and at least half weren't condesending. And if your question was on page 10 when you come back, a simple search pulled up all YOUR topics. That's what most of us did.

To merge the two together would take the elimination of the "spam-like" posts like the ones I mentioned above. I will leave the decision to you guys, but I was under the impression that these topics are important to you and have a place here...

Well then we would have what would really be a firearm ONLY GD, which we already have. We really aren't trying to screw up the board, or mess with the management, we just miss the Grand Ol AR15.com. Dammit we love it here.

It is actually YOUR fault GB for creating the coolest place on the net. I never had 3000 posts on ANY board. And I was a Moderator on the board I came here from. No upgrade you could ever do can compete with the environment and pure exchange of information that "was" AR-15.com.

I prefer it as a separate forum. Fun stuff in one, serious stuff in another. Many serious posts got lost very quickly in the old format, buried by nonsense posts like "Night Crew" or "Greens at the table" or "Hypothermia" or stupid flaming backpack stories or whatever.

The Firearm related GD just doesn't get the traffic. As a result fewer people benefit from or offer advice.
View Quote

The people avoiding the firearms forums are the same ones that wouldn't click on a firearms related topic anyway. There's no traffic lost.

I've always thought that threads like "babe of the day" had a place, but that place wasn't in a firearms forum. Don't get me wrong, Steyr, I like the flavor of female flesh even more than most. I just thought it should have a special place where people who might be offended couldn't whine about it. There are few things worse than listening to a whiner..

Now it's fixed. There's a place to go if you want serious info, and there's a place to go if you just want to relax or goof around.

I liked how the old weaponforums.com had a separate forum section for Humor. I thought this site should have something similar, and I think it's a good thing.

If we, the regular posters on the GD posted firearm topics here, would that be a problem?

I think I see a solution.

We continue to talk guns-n-bs, and those who want no bs with their gun talk can post in the firearm GD. Kinda like hot or mild. Will that work?
