I don't think my chipset will allow me to overclock in my box. (it's a Dell Dimension... heck, it was free, so I can't complain)
My father got his main machine's MB and CPU from a company that GUARANTEES both the MB and CPU if you overclock it... they make the thermal cooling solution, so they warrant everything. Sweet deal if you ask me... but I think they stopped doing it, because they couldn't provide technical support anymore. |

I have a celeron 333 doing 416 amd would probably go faster. 416 is just where I decided to stop. It has worked flawlessly for several years.

I've got a PIII 650E running at anywhere between 910Mhz and 950Mhz (depending on how hot it is in the house) Its been acting flaky lately (I've had it overclocked for about a year maybe?) So I think its almost time to ramp it back down to 650Mhz. Maybe I'll upgrade to an Athlon... hehehe
Edited to say I have two original Celeron 300As running at 464Mhz, one K6 233 Laptop running at 300Mhz, and a G3 266 running at 350Mhz. Maybe I overclock too much. Nah. -Gloftoe |

No can do on my P-4 1.7.
This unit is way too hot. Also runs a Geforce 3, with sink and 2 fans. For fun look at the shielding on the memory of the P-4. |

I have a three year-old Pentium 300 that I've overclocked to 450. You might say it's stable:
[root@www /root]# uptime 7:33pm up 393 days, 18:29, 22 users, load average: 2.48, 1.16, 1.12 Yes, it's been on and under a heavy load for over a year w/o problems. |

Overclocking is running your computer at a faster clock speed than the manufacturer's specifications.
You CPU speed(clock speed, measured in mhz)is made up of to variables 1 multiplier(Intel you can't change Amd you can) and 2 Front Side Bus speed this you can change depending on mother board. there are currently 3 standard FSB speed 66,100,133mhz. So in my Celeron case the multiplier is 5.5 the factories FSB is 66+366 no I OVERCLOCK it to 550mh my changing the FSB to 100(5.5*100) now I have paid for a 366 but actual have a 550 There are more issues involve but you can read them here. My main machine is water cooled and has been running for about a year, my kids machines have been up nearly 2 year. All three are using 100% cpu power crunching Workunits for seti@home

I have my PIII 700 running at 784mhz with no special cooling.
Before that had a K6-300 running at 412. |

My K6-2/333 used to run at 416, then I just replaced the chip with a 550.
The PIII 550's motherboard doesn't have any settings that will allow for an overclocking. The dual PIII 700 motherboard only goes to 100MHz front side bus...I've been thinking of swapping out the mobo and going to 133 FSB for dual 933... And last, my kid's P60 is overclocked to 66MHz (everybody say "woohoo!") |

Dual Proc. Box with twin Celeron 366's @550.
P2/300 @450. Starting on an Athlon box now...its a good hobby during the winter when the drag strip is closed...hot rod CPU's instead of cars! |

Nice setup Zoom, buddy of mine ran a BBS some years ago on a 486 33 under MS-DOS 5, was up for over a year and a half before the fan died thanks to dog hair.
My system is a Pentium 200Mhz Oc'd to 300Mhz, got another one thats a dual Pentium Pro 200 at 266Mhz. |

Had some bad experiences overclocking, so I don't do it anymore. Fried a couple of processors, borke me and my wallet from overclocking for quite some time to come.
For fun look at the shielding on the memory of the P-4. If what you are looking at is the same thing I am thinking of it is a big blob of copper on your motherboard with some traces snaking through it? If so, that is RAMBUS (only thing P-4's used to be able to use). The blob is a ground shape, known as a guard band. Not for the heat of the memory, it's used to keep out EM interference. Still looks odd to me though. Wish I had a P-4 or an XP.... [bounce] |

P166 mmx running at 200mhz on a ASUS P55T2P4 MB for years now. (by accident)
Celeron 300a running at 450mhz on a SOYO SY6BA+ MB for 2 years. ( my first overclock) Celeron 700 at 950mhz on a ASUS CUV4X MB. Celeron 566 at 766 until heat sink fell off now it only overclocks to the 600's AMD K6-3-450 , FIC PA2013 MB ,unstable at any speed past 450 AMD K6- 300 , ASUS SP97v MB , unstable at any speed past 300. Overclocking is fun !!!! |

one was heat, yes. Took my MB out with it.
The other was a total pooch screw resulting in too much core voltage. Small puff of Black Magic from the CPU and it went kaput. That was with an old 233MMX. Processors are much faster than they need to be and cheap enough not to bother with overclocking. Back when the newest processor cost nearly $1000, it made sense. Nowadays, with the price difference between an AMD 1500XP and an 1800XP being a whopping $90, it just doesn't make sense to me. |

My server is a BP6 running a single 366 @ 550. Really short of CAD programs or video/photo editing nothing slows her down. My Game machine is a 1G T-bird at 1.2G.

As you can tell from other posts seen above, that overclocking is making your CPU/Motherboard run faster than it was originally intended. This is a fun project to embark upon, but BEWARE! By overclocking, it's typically running higher voltages through your chipsets, and running at higher frequencies. This causes a VERY rapid, and VERY hazardous heat build-up. You ABSOLUTELY MUST have a good cooling SYSTEM installed in your computer. I rigged up my own customly. It is possible (although somewhat difficult to do to PII's) to SAFELY increase your 450 to 559Mhz (where mine is at). It's extremely stable at this point! I have a nice 3.8 cubic foot tower case with a pseudo-etched glass in-lay saying "DANGER HIGH VOLTAGE" on it, a black-light behind it (makes the insides look kewl), and 7 different clusters of cooling fans all controlled by a set of switches inside my computer. If my computer ever gets to a certain temperature, I flip on enough cooling to cope with the problem area (Video card -VERY HOT with 1 direct fan) (CPU under control with 3 fans) (tower casing has 3 90mm fans to blow/suck fresh cool air through. I have: PII 450 OC'd to 559 128 MB RAM 7 cooling fans total 2 PSU's (Power Supply Unit) 1 Handmade switchboard on the front of the PC and some kewl lighting effect junk. -inuhbad |
