Why is it 9:00 pm on the East coast but 5:30am in Afghanistan?

I always thought that times zones were in 1 hour increments.


Where did the 1/2 hour come from?


I know that i'm not the only one asking the same question. Nobody at work could answer it.

I have always wondered why the hell the time zone lines aren't straight? It just seems like it would be more accurate and universal if the lines ran straight down the map from north to south.
