.30-06 necked to .22 is better.  I believe it's called the .22-06 Accelerator or something along those lines.

DVD,
We used to regularly use .30-30 Accelerators for coyote. They were soboted .223. 55gr PSPs.
They punched right on through a 1/4inch plate of steel I had. Nice.

(edit)I think they were from Remington. Definately factory ammo.

You need to reference "Cartridges of the World".
What is posted at that site seems to reflect, it memory serves me right, the old Remington ".30-06 Accelerator" cartridge.  I don't think it is .22-06.  Like I       said, "Cartridges of the World" would be a good reference.

Coversix, how was accuracy? I'd thought about tryin' some, but had heard that the sabot-type rds weren't accurate for sh*t.

I was helping the neighbor load some sabots and one important thing to do is use the .223 seating rod in the .308 die otherwise the sabot petals get smashed and deformed.

He has some ss109 sabots in .300 win mag that I want to try out.

get a 50 cal sabot that brings it down to 30 cal, then into that sabot insert the 30 cal sabot to 223. use some ss109's. I'd like to see the speeds on that... thats if the bullet can withstand that.

One of the board members at Varminthunters.com just sent me a mess of the sabots for .30X.22
I want to work up some loads for my Mosin and maybe the '06
I've heard the accuracy is poor, but I'll let you know how it goes.
Too many projects, too little time!

Years back I tried some of the Accelerators
in a Savage 110 (30/06).  Accuracy was in the
2" range @ 100m.  Rather disappointing to me,
as with handloads I could get groups around 1"
or so.  I think the 1-10" twist rate was way
too much for a .22 caliber bullet at over 4000
fps.

... isn't ".30 Sabots for .223" like stuffing 10# of shit in a 5# bag?

... you mean ".223 sabots for .30"?

ww, dang you're right! I was all ready to load up some .223 brass with .30 cal bullets! Instead I'll have to sabot it down to like .177 hehe do they have that?

P.S. Not sure how fast the .223 would go shot out of a .50 cal shell, remember the gas speed of burning gunpowder is finite, there are limits to how fast the bullet will be pushed.  I think anything over 4000fps is getting close to the limit (necked down cases help out... in the case of a sabot, it doesn't change anything because the barrel is still the same diameter).
