I've had a couple of those things rattle at me. Definately a sound you don't want to hear, unless your hunting for them. Real scary. Especially in sage brush when you can't spot them immediately. And these were only maybe 3 feet.

believe it or not, this snake was taken with a bow!!! the big guy in the picture was gonna try and catch it, when he grabbed a hold of the tail one of his buddies nailed it with an arrow. needless to say he was pissed!!
