Another update: I want a gun as a starter gun and once I get comfortable enough, I want a gun for protection and another gun for target shooting/fun.

BB still hasn't said if it's for the range, carry, or whether it's even a rifle / pistol?

Andrea,

Let me do some checking & I can give you some .22 firearms prices (new) for you to consider if you want to go to that caliber.

Regardless of some questionable comments I think you're getting some good feedback from some folks. Hang in there! I'm out of here for now.

calm down, blondie.  i didn't mean it in a derogatory way.   i've spent enough time around here to know what flies and what doesn't from the female posters.  you're "i'm hot shit" (or was it "i'm [i]too[/i] hot?) attitude generally doesn't.  just meant that if you want to be taken seriously, then act serious.  flaunting your breast size isn't exactly the way to do it.

and you'll get no slack for your gender on this board.

to talyn, don't forget Miss Magnum.  and i'm not going anywheres.  consider this my online home.  [:D]

I have taken several female frieds to the range that started with .22s and wanted to get something more powerful for protection. It has been my experience that none of them like snub nose or short barrel .38s even with mild .38 loads. They all complained about recoil and a lack of accuracy. All but one have liked the Sig 225 in 9mm. Great size for their hand size with lighter recoil and phenomenal accuracy. Give a look at Khar Arms K-nine as well. Both guns are expensive, but worth every penny.

One last time before I have to go make dinner, pet the cat & unwind.

ARlady,

Glad to hear about Miss Magnum! After SandraJane/Jean/whatever vaporized off the board I thought this was an all guys club, unfortunately.

Andrea,

For starters a .22 can be OK for self-defense also.  On a limited budget practice is the key & that's why I'm harping on it.  You can't beat a .22 for economy.

Good night folks!

Blonde_BombShell(see how quickly your nick got changed to BB [:)]) just some pointers from a guy who didn't grow up around firearms, got little experience in the Navy. Here is a quick list in no particular order.

1. Cruise the net and look through the web sites for different stores, most have pics of new guns and some used ones. Also look at manufactures web sites, this will give you an idea about what is out there.

2. $150 may not get you much in the way of a pistol or revolver. The selection gets small at that price, but you can still find good to fair equipment, if you look around.

3. Since you said you are in college go with a .22, .38 or a 9mm. The ammo's cheaper and you won't worry about shots missed at the range, ie "well, there goes $50 dollars in ammo all through the white part of the paper." just a quick guide, in Mass. I get 9mm for about $0.06 per round and .22 for about $.02. The question is "How much can you afford to miss?"

4. Whatever firearm you get and carry, shoot a minimum of 100 rounds per week with that gun with the ammo that you carry. Just remember that the backstop at the range is dirt, on the street it's my kid, don't miss your target.

5. Firearms are like tattoos, if you have one, you won't just have one for long. In the span of one year I bought 8 guns and am still looking for more.

6. If you can fit a Glock in you hand, get one. If a Glock won't fit start stretching your fingers till one fits [;)] JK. When you try to fit a gun squeeze your fist as tight as you can, if you can get a good solid grip you'll be okay. In a stressful situation that is how you may be holding the gun and you don't want recoil throwing it out of your hand.

Can't think about anything else right now.[insert disclaimer here] YMMV

Have fun shooting, stay safe and concentrate on your target.

Forgot to say: Don't bring it on campus we all know that campus security is great, right up there with the mall ninja. And the surrounding areas around colleges are totally safe, and the "walking security college volunteer/ escorts" are all well trained bodyguards who couldn't get jobs as bouncers cause they are too big. [rolleyes]

Seriously: since you're a woman you have some concealment options that men don't have. There are bra's that can act as holsters, also you may start wearing skirts that are below the knee if you can find a holster that can stay secure there. This can serve two purposes: one, easy access, and two, shock value. A rapist will want what's under there so show him what he is getting. [shock] [pistol]

Don't know about NC but in FL don't bring your gun on campus even with a CWP. But, you'll learn that stuff when you get your CWP.

In that case get a .22 revolver. Have your BF check the cylinder, if he knows how, to make sure it isn't bent.

Back to the original question, what kind of gun for a new lady shooter?  I would not buy a gun quite just yet.  I would try shooting all of your boyfriend's small caliber guns 38spl 22lr etc.  If you get bored, have him take you to a range where they have rental guns, and try some of those.  Take a class in firearms training class from a NRA certified instructor, sometimes those folks will rent you a gun for a nominal fee.  After all of that, you will probably have decent idea of what gun you want.  My recommendation would be revolver.  As for a manufacturer, Taurus Internation, Miami FL has a decent line of reasonable priced guns.  Also tried the used market, I have a friend who buys very few guns new, and he get quite a few good deals.  And also join the NRA.  Those folks need more woman members.  At the rate we are going now, your children will not be able to own a gun.  Half the fun of buying a gun is just looking.  Good luck!

USA! USA! USA!
