Some excuses I have heard (and used) for missing skeet and/or sporting clays targets for you shotgunners out there....

I missed because of:

The wind
The sun
Too hot or cold
wrong choke
wrong shell
bad pull (too early or late)
safety was on (ha ha ha ha )
'something wrong' with gun
stock needs bending
stock too long or short
trigger sucks
barrel needs porting
needs longer forcing cones
chip flew off target but nobody saw it
speed of targets is wrong (skeet)
need longer barrel
bad reloads

I'm sure I missed some....

I think it's shooting's universal excuse.
Ever hear the "¼ MOA nuts" bitch, & argue  for 4 straight hours about "ruining" 4 ounces of powder by keeping it at 68º instead of 66º  for a "whole month"? [:D]

I really, I mean really suck at sporting clays.

Two times ago, I scored 36 out of 50.  Not great, but somewhat respectable.

Just recently I went and got 18 out of 50.  Not good, not good at all.[:(]

i heard "damn! i allmost shot the f--ker!" i looked over and there was a large golden eagle just pulling out of his dive at a thrown clay pigeon!
these guys threw a couple more and the bird went after them also. after sampling a few pieces he decided they didn't taste too good, and flew off to greener pastures. true story

The sun was in my eye.
I sneezed.
This is a new gun. Barrel must be bent.

When I was a teen I missed a squirrel at about 15 or 20 feet.  Shouldn't have missed either. Had the proper sight picture, good trigger pull and everything.  I said "barrel must be bent" just to get my cousins laughing.  Well after missing a few more squirrels and a trip to the gunsmith turned out that barrel was bent and bad.

I use an 870 pump to shoot sporting clays.  This is no excuse, but I do forget to chamber that first round some times.  I do feel stupid when I shoot and just hear a click.

I shoot Clays pretty damned well. But, when I miss my excuses are:

1) Barrel is too short. A 30" barrel is a hell of alot better than an 18" Barrel for shooting skeet.

2) Wrong Choke. The wrong choke can give less time to fire or vary the distance you need to fire from.

3) Wrong Ammo. Try comparing Wolf and Target Grade Ammo. some time when shooting Rifles. You'll notice a significant difference in accuracy.

4) Damned Wind. I've actually used this excuse. Two words "Wind Drift"

5) I Chipped It. I guess they just didn't notice it.

6) I Just Let It Get Too Far Away. Now if I'd had my SKS and a Hellfire it wouldn't have.
