I am not clear on what he wants the rifle for. Competition? "All around use?" Kentucky Elk Season? ;) (BTW how are those herds doing)
I think he should look at the Savage 110 line-- They have that Scout config rifle and their other rifles while aesthetic monstrosities, have an across the board reputation for excellent accuracy.
Plus, with the money saved, he could spring for some good glass to put on top of the rifle.
Or a decent spotting scope.
Or a nice .22 to accompany the .308 on those days when he doesn't feel like forking over $15 for 40 shots.
I can just see it, a Schmidt & Bender on a Savage. Moslem, Christian or Jew or Buddhist, you've got to admit that's blasphemy!
Whatever you guys decide, make sure that you are OK with the trigger or that the person selling you the rifle can adjust the trigger to your liking. Bad triggers suck ASS.
I guess if he's a hi-speed lo drag type, he should blow $1000 on his first rifle. But that Savage will likely shoot just as well if not better......
I think that you could definitely find a Sako for less than $1000, even NIB. Magnum research had a very nice semi-custom rifle based on the Sako action for not much more than $1000. OTOH, some of my gun-crazed friends in the Mid-South declared the Sako to be not all that great.
Good luck
