From the horses mouth
WHAT DOES THE "AR" IN AR-15, AR-180, OR AR-10 STAND FOR?
There is a common misconception that AR stands for "ArmaLite Rifle."   This is untrue.  The AR-17, for instance, is a 12-gauge shotgun.  Early designations like ArmaLite 10 were shortened to simply AR-10.  The AR refers to ArmaLite.

The ArmaLite Division of Fairchild developed the AR-15 in 1959.  Fairchild licensed the rifle to the Colt's Patent Firearm Manufacturing Corporation, and Colt's assumed the AR-15 trademark.  Early Colt rifles were marked "Colt ArmaLite 15."  Even today, the designation to that Colt brand rifle refers, somewhat embarrassingly, to ArmaLite.

Actually, I heard the CEO of Armalite/Fairchild was a devout racist.  His original and secret meaning was "Aryan Rifle".

"AR" stands for ArmaLite.(orig. spelling) Check it out at www.armalite.com, as quoted above. There was even an ArmaLite shotgun that had "AR" as a prefix in its designation. Duncan Long is therefore mistaken.

Colt bought the rights to the name "AR-15" from the original ArmaLite company. Armalite had come up with the term AR-15 for their rifle based on the Stoner system in .223. That is why Armalite AR-15s are called M15s at this time.

And yes, they be one "BAD ASS RIFLE".

Maybe when Colt goes out of business, Armalite will get the AR-15 copyright back? :^)
