Hey hey HEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I hate MD...well, driving in it...freaken roadsigns LIE...well, they leave out pertinent facts.
ie: "Gas this Exit" should read "Gas this exit, 35 miles from the ramp, only open 1-2 AM and attendant Bubba Mohammed doesn't take anything larger than a five dollar bill...."

Fixed it for you.

I don't know about you, but I try to stay away from anyone named "Muhammed" especially near the Beltway!

Uh, the question is present tense.  Is it northern or southern, not was it.  It doesn't matter what side it was on in the American Civil War/"War of Northern Aggression"/"War of Rebellion."  What matters is where does it fall now.

Too late, the momentum has already begun.

12 pages, then the "Lincoln = Hitler" post,  then a lock after someone blames the Civil War on the Jews.

Shucks, we on the Shore(Eastern Shore of the Chesapeake Bay) know we oughta be our own state.  You really can't judge the whole state by the big cities, especially a hellhole like Baltimore.

Our accent, however, is an interesting thing to note. It isn't Northern, by any stretch(at least not in my experience), but not quite Southern.  I guess 350 years of being very isolated from not only the rest of the state, but the rest of the country, makes a difference.  So much so that my brother-in-law's family from Smith Island call anyone not from here "furreigners" or foreigners.

So, while I voted for Southern, it's really in-between.  There is a saying about Marlyand, "The north doesn't want them and the South won't claim them, so we tell 'em both to go to hell."

I would have to say that your far Western, Southen, and Eastern Marylanders are "Southern". Any by Western I mean WESTERN, I'd say anything west of Hancock. For those who don't know where that is, it is the thinnest part of Maryland, about 2 miles wide to be exact.

Seems like most of the West, East, and South Maryland and "Southern" but are misrepresented by BALTIMORE.

I'm from the Eastern Shore.  I remember going on a hog hunting trip in Alabama and we were having a beer with the guide.  He says to us, "For a bunch of Yankees, you guys are not bad."  The poor guide was almost strung up for calling us Yankees.  Needless to say I voted for MD to be a Southern state, though the Baltimore/Annapolis crowd say otherwise.
MD was definitly one of those states that brother fought brother.
One other interesting note, MD was a state that was exempt from outlawing slavery.  This was to keep up what little support the Union had.  The Eastern Shore of MD is definitly Southern.
Also, speaking of Smith Island.  If anyone ever goes there you have to get their cakes.  They are so isolated that English professors brought Shakesperean plays for the residents to read.  Their accent had not changed since being settled and the professors wanted to hear what the plays really sounded like in the original dialect.
Lastly, damn all you "come here's" for raising real estate and the "Baltimorons" for calling us the outhouse of MD.  (That's for all the fellow Eastern Shore people on this board.)

I dont know why you are arguing about such foolishness. Everyone knows that NY is the Gravitational center of the universe. On my map it has long island, Manthatten and then just blackness, and it says "Beyond here lies Dragons and Crazy Goi."

I spent 4 or 5 months in APG.  Maryland has a split personality disorder.  Half the state thinks they are in Dixie and the other half thinks they are New Englanders.

The politics are definately "northern"

Brunswick is one of the towns where I feel like I'm caught in a time warp whenever I pass through there.  Maryland has some absolutely beautiful countryside in the Frederick area.

If it weren't for all the libs in Baltimore, Montgomery, and PG counties, it might pass for a "culturally southern" state.

Oh, and they have kickass crabcakes.

But BWI airport is still a PAIN IN THE &^(&^& ASS TO GET TO.

Well, it looks like we have that Maryland's physical location is Southern because of the Mason-Dixon Line.

Maryland's politics are Northern.
But, like has been stated by many of us Marylanders, Baltimore kinda misrepresents the rest of Maryland. Plenty of us in Western, Southern, and Eastern Maryland are "Southern" but Baltimore seems to control the state.

In the Civil War, Maryland was Southern but was turned into a border state. It was a slave-holding state and Federal troops overran it and Lincoln allowed it to continue to slavery to prevent it from seceeding and losing the U.S. capitol.

So, after doing some math and adding the scores up it looks like Maryland is SOUTHERN by a score of 1,293,546 to 1!!!!!!!

Great topic!

It's hard, considering you only have Southern or Northern to vote for. See, my family and I usually travel to North Carolina or Florida on vacation by car, and we have to drive through Maryland. As we are driving through there, it just seems like a Southern state. Nice people, farmland, road-side grills, etc. However, I know that is mostly occupied with Northerners back during the Civil War, but also the Confederates were able to travel through there, basically without getting harmed as passing through (IE: General Lee to Gettysburg). If I had to choose one, I say Northern state.

It may have been a Southern state or a border state during the Civil war, but in modern times, it is a northeastern liberal state.

The politics of the state have a split personality.

Baltimore county, Prince Georges County, Anne Arundel County, and Montgomery County are liberal bastions and control the rest of the state.

The Eastern Shore, Southern Maryland, and Western Maryland are as redneck and/or hillbilly as they come.  It really is two, or three, or four states culturally.

There is a very large black population in PG and Baltimore counties.  Affluent whites in Anne Arundel and Montgomery (and now Frederick) counties.  And lots of whites in the other counties.

I sort of have a love-hate relationship with the state.  I lived there for five years, but never appreciated the politics.  I did, however, have lots in common with the rednecks and/or hillbillies; from growing up in the Panhandle of West Virginia, near the Western Maryland border.

I would say that it was historically a Southern state, but has been corrupted by liberals and now is almost socialist in politics.
