pretty nice, eh?

Second of all, as the mods already know, I am Captain Obvious. I'm sure my account will be locked within 15 minutes (MAX). So, I may not get to reply to this. However, here is the deal: If you can help me out with my computer problems, I will sell you my ORANGE Thermold in 98% condition, never-been-in-a-gun to the best of my knowings, for $22, shipped.

Here is my problem:

I own an HP Pavilion 8656C and recently upgraded to Windows 2000 Professional. My sound card is no longer recognized, and I have no volume control, what so ever, and my computer will not play any sound, what so ever.

Second of all, the keyboard that came with it, no longer completely works correctly. The keys do, sure, but the volume knob on it does not, nor do any of the other "one-touch" buttons on it.

I went over to HP's site, and downloaded drivers with the file name: "rip417na" for my sound card, and "mmkb87xx". No matter what I do, both have errors installing.

The Therold will go to the FIRST person, who SUCCESSFULLY helps me solve my problem.

My email address is set to not show, because it's a BS account, I created with hotmail, just to get this account.

However, an email that you can contact me at is: [email protected] . Since I am doubting that my account will still be active, by the time this gets solved, I will contact you by email if you're the one who "fixes" it. However, if you do submit an idea/driver/whatever, go ahead and email me anyway, incase (hopefully) it works, and you can get my ORANGE Thermold.

Thanks,

Your old friend,

Captain Obvious.

PS: Steyr, still waiting for that email.

Just format your Hard Drive and install everything again.  That will be one Beta C mag for my consultation.

It was formatted, reloaded with the recovery disks that came with it, then upgraded to WIN2K.

What service pack do you have installed? Try SP 2 for win2k. Next go into my computer properties to hardware and delete the current sound devices and then restart the system.

Aside from the softwear mumbo-jumbo, have you tried turning the computer off, removing the sound card, running it again to remove all the sound card drivers, and then re-installing the card and re-starting the computer?

Ideally the sound card should be Plug and Play, and if you remove it and re-install it, the computer may correct the problem itself.

AFARR

There is always the possibility that the sound card is dead--it may have just died at the same time you happened to upgrade the softwear.

Why are you asking for computer help on AR15 message board?  Especially on one you've been banned from?

My suggestion...go to a computer message board.  At least they wont know who you are there.

go to windowsupdate.com and look for a win 2000 pach for your brand sound card.

Some times you have drivers that will not run in a new OS.

All drivers are is a pach from the card to the OS, new OS new pach[8D]

If you do this right you may send me my new mag at any time.

Ummm...Duhhhh,
Did you bother checking HP's website under your product number and then check the FAQ's?

"Multimedia Keyboard Driver - The multimedia keyboard will operate with Windows 2000, but the programmable buttons will not function (including the volume knob and the multimedia playback keys)."

Even better:
"HP does not recommend upgrading HP Pavilion PCs from Windows 98 to Windows 2000; although some may wish to upgrade for specific needs."
"Hewlett-Packard does not recommend upgrading HP pavilion personal computers from Windows me edition to Windows 2000; although, some may wish to upgrade for specific needs."

It sounds to me like you didn't download the correct drivers for your sound card or else there are no WIN2000 drivers for it.

You are shit-outta-luck on the keyboard sound controler.

Good luck.

Windows 2000 is NT based.  Have you tried to find or use Windows NT drivers for your sound card?  Doesn't the keyboard have drivers also (for all those buttons)?  Try the NT drivers.

Format the disk and reload Windows 98 or whatever was on it. Win2K probably doesn't support the sound card or that HP keyboard. Win2K's hardware support isn't the best. Unless HP comes out with a version of Win2K for that machine, you are screwed. Sorry.
You can email me for contact info for the thermold.

Tell it to change the driver and when it promps where from tell it to search the internet or microsofts website. alot of times they will like those hokey "microsoft" provided drivers better than the intended one, atleast to recocgnize it. Easy try anyway

Unplug the unit from the wall.  With monitor and keyboard still connected place it in the trash.  Purchase Macintosh G4.  No sound card in the Macs.  Problem solved.

I'll e-mail you with shipping information for the mag.

Wait, I can fix your problem.

Just hold down ctrl and alt then tap Delete twice really fast.

This will restore your sound card and allow the new keyboard to function.

More importantly check to see if there is a BIOS upgrade for your PC. I've had to do this with some HP's and you have to do it before you install 2000. Otherwise upgrade BIOS, format and reload 2000.

saw your post in the ar15 board

ok, what happend is very simple and common....
you installed an operating system that has no simularity to windows 98,
you installed 2000, its a beast of a different type....your win98 type system
(95-98-me) is a dos based fat system, the win2000 is  NOT! SO THE DRIVERS
FOR WIN 98/95 OR ME WILL MOST TIMES NOT WORK in a non dos operating system...THIS IS COMMONPLACE WITH WIN200 UPGRADES, WIN2000 IS NOT INTENDED FOR HOME USE..ITS A VERY HEAVYDUTY
BUSINESS OPERATING SYSTEM... that is why you sound card does not work
hp does not have a win2000 compatable driver...you have a couple choices,
re run the restore disk and leave 2000 in the box it came in...experiment with
alot of 2000 compatable soundcard drivers and maby find one that works,,,
or buy a new soundcard thats 2000 compatable......
----------------------
next problem,..keyboard... the buttons are programmable...on of 2 things has happened...either the drivers for the keyboard are not win2000 compatable
or you need to open the program that assigns the keys and reassign them!
