The military wouldn't take me when I tried to join. Something about pending charges in Santa Cruz county. I aced all there tests (a monkey could pass) and got the recruters all worked up. Then they found out about the discharging a weapon an a state beach thing,  Doh!

Hell, why not. Recently I was shocked to see, on PBS, a nuclear fast-attack with a camera crew on board while the sub was on patrol - off Russia !  
Submarines Caiman, Ronquil and Segundo - basically highly modernized WWII diesel-electric boats.  Did plenty of time in the Western Pacific - Sea of Japan, South China Sea, etc.  Those old boats were extremely quiet on batteries and made excellent "sonar platforms." The recordings made by those boats formed the basis for the contemporary audio library of the Russian fleet.                                        USS Daniel Boone, nuc powered missile boat -made first Polaris missile patrol in the Pacific; departed Christmas eve of 1964 after the USSR's spy trawler took its' self out of position when they were sure we wouldn't depart near a holiday. BF surprise for the commies.  Had my only "legal" drink on a US warship the next day - Christmas day. The captain had smuggled many cases of a pretty good "red" on board for the occasion.  (Left from Guam - being on patrol was more fun than Guam.)  By the way, that red went down pretty well with the turkey !
Speaking of the trawler, when we came back two and one-half months later she was still sitting off Guam and drifting with the current with engines off - we damn near surfaced under her.  I don't know who was more surprised; the trawler when we surfaced about 500 yards away or the captain when he took that first look out the periscope.
USS Sargo, nuc fast-attack - last patrol and the only one where someone went crazy - had to pull off-station and xfer him before he accidentally killed us all.  He had to be under observation 24-hours - we were giving some thought to launching his sorry-ass out a torpedo tube.
On one of these patrols we brought back both video and audio of one of the USSR's early submarine launched missiles.  We had every antenna and sensor deployed and were sitting only about 1,000 yds off their missile boat's starboard beam - things got a little interesting when we were spotted by their destroyers as we were only in about 700 feet of water - Nuc's can really haul if already detected and don't mind making a little noise.  (Better luck another time shitheads.)  That video and sonar went directly to some house in DC with white paint.
Lots of familiarity with some places nick-named "Vlad" and "Petro" as well as Australia, Philippines, Japan, Okinawa, Guam, waters around Southeast Asia, etc., etc.
Navy rank (Rating) is not comprehensible to most excepting ex-squids - I was an ST1(SS) E-6.
My service was from 3 June 58 thru 28 August 65.
We're now down to about 75 sub's to do impossible tasks and still they are doing them well.
Among the most secret things now-days is the very high rate of alcoholism and divorce among the submarine forces.  This has and will be always true for men serving so often and so long at sea.
To all of you who have served in any service any where and at any time - "Thank You."
For those of you who served in Southeast Asia from 1956-1974 a special "Thank You" and "Welcome Home."
If any readers are still active "Bubble-Heads"  a good many of us are now "Ex-Sub" sailors and think often of you and understand what's done quietly each day for this country -  a most grateful and heartfelt "Thank You."

5subslr5, the reenactment group I run has a member who used to be a rating on US subs in the Pacific in the late '60s- he has an unbelieveable trove of stories- e.g., getting drunk with Soviet sailors in Hong Kong, and somehow exchanging hats, etc. (VERY illegal, esp. for USSR types); being involved in a yet another attempt to "loop the loop" underwater with a submarine (unsuccessful) with a very unorthodox CO; being on a diesel sub for months w/o a real bath, then getting liberty in Japan, hopping into a giant hot tub with geishas, and all the diesel fuel oil coming out of his skin pores, and polluting the wooden bath tub (and the geishas! Really stank!)  when he hit the hot water and soap... I can't remember all the details, but whenever he turns out to events, at the campfire in the evenings, he just keeps people spellbound, with story after story.

Very affected by the sinking of the Kursk- he said sub guys are thesame all over- a silent brotherhood.

Who me?- I was never in the service- an Air Force brat, though.

As the man said- thanks to all who served and still do. Some of us civilians have an insight into what you have gone through, and appreciate it.

I had an IQ over 90 so I had to go into the Navy.  1984 - 1990.  Six long bitter years.  I was an Electronics Technician Second Class (E5) when I got out.  The only thing I fought was a potential substance abuse problem (as far as you know, nudge, wink).

Funny thing is, during the whole 6 years I didn't do one day at sea, I never even took a tour of a ship - and I really consider myself lucky.

I was the S-2 Chief for 1/6 from 85-89, and then I went to 2d Recon Bn in 1990.  Then I got pulled for joint duty.  We probably know some of the same people.  I was also at K-Bay, but that was in the seventies.
