Yes, believe it or not, I don't have one yet. Any suggestions would be great. Under $400.00, not for hunting, just defense.  [uzi]

Silver's offer is a great deal!  However, if you decide it should be a Remington, I recommend the model 870 Express HD. It's an 18" cyl bore parkerized gun that is absolutely perfect for home defense. They can be had for $250 - $275 new. The choice between Mossy and Rem is largely personal, kinda like Ford vs Chevy. Either can be customized to your satisfaction easily.

I love the Mossberg 590 as well.  Check it out and check around for prices.  I got mine cheap enough, and love it!

Got my Winchester Defender with truglo front site for 199.  Best 200 bucks I've spent.  This is my first shotgun except for my dad's duck gun I haven't used in over a decade.  Now when I go shooting I grab the defender every time.  Shooting hand thrown clays gets addicting, though the shoulder does get sore after a while. I originally wanted a Moss 590 but this deal came by and I couldn't be happier.

Silver's deal is a great one too.  The 18 inch barrels are relatively rare as I was looking for one a year ago.  I would do it but the Defender does everything I could ask.

I vote for gus's choice: Rem 870 Express, thosands of cops use'em every day and there's tons of accesories. Tough and reliable!

Suggestions:

1. Mossberg 500/590 (my first choice)
2. Winchester 1300 Defender (tru-glo sight is nice)
3. Ithaca 37 (no disconnector, can be fun)
4. Benelli Nova (relatively new, not many mods)
5. Remington 870 (modified)
6. Beretta 1201FP semi-auto (if you are lucky, you can find one for around $400, best price I've seen is $450).
7. Remington 11-87 (modified, Walmart is closing these out for $389)

HTH,

Justin

I completely agree with gus.

Having owned both the 590A1 and numerous 870s I can vouch for the fact that either is a superb defensive shotgun.

Currently I own 3 different 870 models.  Vintage Wingmaster, new SPS SuperMag for waterfowling and a HD model that I am customizing further.

If you have ever looked at Scattergun Technologies (Now part of Wilson Combat) then you have seen what is probably the best defensive packages known for the 870.

You can take a cheap HD 870 and start adding on as there is a plethora of goodies available for the 870.

You can add a heat sheild, side saddle and extend the capacity by 2 rds. all for about $90 and have one serious defensive weapon.

Furthermore, you can send an old junker 870 of any model to Wilson and get their [green] Remington Steal[/green] package which consists of many improvements including but not limited to converting to 3", shortening barrell if needed, re-parking the entire weapon, poly coating the internals, bumping to 7 rds for 18" version, adding jumbo headed safety, adding 4 or 6 rd. side saddle, adding new synthetic stock and fore-end and adding tac sling and swivels and replacing any worn out parts..........there may be more but that is all I can remember.  All this for about $189 I think.

Not a bad deal really if you figure you can get a asthetically worn out but functionally usable 870 for less than $200 any day of the week.

This would put you still below your $400 window.

Hope this helps.......www.wilsoncombat.com/sgt/sgtindex.htm

Go to WalMart and get a Remington 870 Express combo.  About 325 last I checked.  20" barrel with rifle sights and a 28" barrel with screw in choke tubes.  Even if you don't hunt now, you'll have the option to do so in the future.  Lots of after market stuff, tho be careful on the exptended mag tubes.  The 870 Express's require some minor surgery to get most after market tubes to fit.  Once you've done that you're stuck with the extended mag.

I pitch another one in for the Benelli semi auto.
Got a couple of pump guns, and nothing in the world seems to say "get the h- outa my face" like racking a round, but if the situation really got hot, I think I'd like the M1 or M3, super 90 or whatever they're calling it now.

Are any of you shotgunners leftys?  How does the ejection on the right side effect you?  I don't have a shotgun yet but I've been looking at either the 590 or 870.  Someone suggested a bottom ejection (Browning)

Any thoughts for a lefty?

Sorry Robert, they don't make guns for lefty...He! He! He! [:D]

Kidding aside, they "DO" make shotgun for lefty. I saw some on sale on Gunsamerica.com

Here is the link for lefty shotgun (I do a search only for Benelli and Remington shotgun)

My vote is for a 870. I bought a 870 Police model with the factory extended tube and factory Ghost rings for $400 plus tax at one of the Arizona Gun shows. The guy I bought mine from always has a couple.
Forgot to mention that I sold my mossberg 590 after buying the 870. The action on the 870 feels ten times better.

The suggestions made above were excellent.

Personal preference would be for the Beretta 1201 if you can find one used for $400.  It is the same gun as the Benelli M1 but with a little different cosmetics outside.

After that, the 870 is an excellent choice.

palmer & 7, No BS but I'm a lefty, no problems with the 590. One of the most important features that I like about the 590 is the safety is a ambi.(up on top) with the 870's I had the A/m safetys never worked good. any other lefty questions?
(Not trying to knock the 870 it is also an awsome gun)

I shoot left handed (long guns only...handguns I shoot right handed)...so call me strange.

I have not shot the 590...but put several rounds through my 500 and 870...I don't have any problems with the ejection on either shotgun...however, if you are not used to the safety on the 870 then it will take some getting used to.  The 500 has the universal thumb safety....left handed models of various shotguns can be found...but you have to spend alot more for them...and if you grew up shooting right handed firearms left handed then a left handed firearms will be very strange..hope my ramblings help,
