I was reading this thread on DU:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=364&topic_id=881157&mesg_id=881290

they are saying that whole NG units are being issued AKs in Iraq and that other soldiers are picking them and using them. Any truth to this?

Some vehicle crews keep underfolders handy for just in case. I've seen troops tend to pick up PPSH's rather and AK's!

some armor units were picking them up at first due to them having rolled in armed with M9s and not having enough M4s around for everyone.

ARE YOU A FUCKING MOLE, MISTER?

Dunno. Some of that stuff sounded made up. "The AK is stamped. How hard is it to make parts for it?"

We always carried a few AKs in our M1114's, in case they were "needed".

Wow I just spent WAY to much time in the DU. I feel sorry for those people. Hopefully they get medication for themselves and stop smoking crack.

I’m always astounded at the people that go to DU and get offended.

If they called the place “Morons `R Us;” would you still be astounded at their stupidity? If they called it “Government Entitlement Sponges;” would you still be baffled by their views on welfare?

It’s called Democratic Underground folks… Don’t be too surprised if they feel the need to kill a fetus, disarm you and start a communist revolution.

I think it's the same as it's been from day one.. No official issue, but a guy who needs a tool uses what's at hand.  An AK beats a pistol.

We wouldn't even officially give the things to the new Iraqi army. They're not going to hand them out to our boys either.

I've been told by friends of mine in Iraq and Afghanistan that some of the vehicle crews held on to underfolder AK's until they had enough M4's to go around.

I'm also sure everyone's seen the photos of the marine clearing buildings with a PPS-41.

But no, no one has been ISSUED an AK-47.

Most units do not get the choice, thier are regs against the use of AKs.  The sand thier causes huge problems with M-16 and M4s though.  The guys who have the option are taking AKs into the field though.

Yes in limited numbers.  I know that I carried one as well as my team NCOIC. (in addition to my M16 and M9 - My NCOIC carried an M4 and an M9 as well)

I think it's a bit much

especially when you risk a separated cornea from the recoil
. People shoot the .50 because the bullets maintain velocity better than most smaller rifles but there are some 30 cal bullets that can almost duplicate the trajectory of a .50 cal.

That must be why I wear contacts.
