well, it looks like .223/5.56 is getting scarce at most of the online stores too.
are we looking at the new trend for american ammo just like the russian? |
ive seen some go up drastically in price also... i was wondering.. some of the stuffi was looking at went up roughly 40%
Yeah, there's a new trend. It's called lemmings buying the shit out of stuff and it drying up based on internet rumor of shortages.
Maybe the rich selection of cheap surplus ammo is drying up (see aim surplus for .223 guatamalan M193), but I don't see commercial ammo drying up. Ammo prices in general are going up a little, but that's been the trend for years. Remember $99 for a 1,000 rd. case of 7.62x51, maybe 10 years ago? And then $149 a case was cheap, and now we're paying $199. Movies cost a dime, candy bars were a nickel, etc. etc.
Just wait until some future president declares "peace with honor" or some nonsense, withdraws combat troops from here and there... lake city's warehouses will quickly fill, the market will glut and we'll have lower ammo prices, at least for a while. Then inevitably they'll resume their trend upward. |
You know, they told me in Macroeconomics that demand was the inverse of supply, i.e. people would buy less as the price increased and more as the price went down.
But I think maybe it's like this... when it's cheap, who the heck wants to stockpile it? Just buy a couple hundred rounds at Wal-Mart on the way to the range. When rumors of a shortage start to appear, oh my, it's time to order 10,000 rounds "just in case". low supply stimulates high demand which implies super high prices. Any dealer who doesn't jack his prices will be picked clean in short order. This will feed the rumor mill (Oh my God! Goober's Ammo Shack just ran out of .380 auto! Let's max our credit cards and stock up while we still can!) Glad I stacked it deep, back when it was cheap Adjusted for inflation, ammo is still about as cheap as it's ever been. Use dollar-cost averaging to lower the average price of your ammo. Get in the habit of buying a fixed dollar amount periodically. Buy in bulk to save money on shipping and to take advantage of quantity discounts. Combining these two strategies will result in your garage being stuffed and you'll be able to replace your furniture with loaded ammo crates. Then you'll almost have enough ammo |
I bought enough .223 for Y2K to last me another 5-10 years depending on the situation.
maybe related maybe not but all metal prices have gone though the friggin roof
which cannot be helping the ammo makers bottom line |
lol ditto on the Y2K comment. And I have some of the coolest camping equipment shit too !!
I wish I saved all that cheap gas I bought though till now ! |
...how much did you get? |
8-10k rounds, should last quite a while as I've converted my 16 to shoot 9mm. I also stocked up on Colt 9mm mags when they were like $75 a piece. |

I may have to finally shoot up that case of Malaysian I still have in the back of the closet....
While Wally world's prices hav gone through the roof, I just ordered 1500 rnds of Wolf for $217.50 shipped. It's the first batch of Wolf I've ordered in about 1.5 yrs, never any past problems....
I hope to have 15K + rounds of .223/ 5.56 by the end of summer '06. --VT |

DAMN!
I just got enough to do two loadouts of my rig. My Wolf Ammo is in my emergency reserve if I have to maek a stan in the Goon compound! It's not my fault! |
Oh....the guy that is named "Eric" has ammo.
and, he's a man, AFAIK. soooooooooooooooooo........ *MeH* Take your chances. |
I'm sorry...That's funny. |

.223 ammo has gotten a little more expensive, but I wouldn't call it a shortage.
Heh. I still haven't shot up all the Portuguese 5.56 that I mailordered in the eighties, for when the ruskies invade. <not joking>
Not to mention the buying spree just prior to the AWB.... And the fire sale prices on 7.62 a few years ago.. At current consumption rates, I won't run out of centerfire ammo for 46.6 years. |
Exactly. The sky is in fact NOT falling. |
well ok, so you can still buy it at $230.00 a 1000 at a few places.disreguard my last
I was worried about an ammo tax. |
My buddy RCBS has taken very good care of me as well. I've got several five gallon buckets of 5.56, and 5k+ 762x39...... |
Hope the 'lube' is included with that. But as some people say, 'Its cheaper to buy surplus then to reload blastin' ammo.................[slowly slinks off to Gun room to crank out another 500 rds.] |
Don't bring worms into an open cannister of shit! |
Not if you factor in inflation. Link |
but that's good news. |
And we ask why it is drying up? |
How cool will it be after Wolf & other suppliers gear up to fill all these shortages and then hoarding stops?
$0.10 .223 again? |
In the new issue of "Combat Arms", there is an article on the new Wolf BRASS cased ammo......I believe, (no , wait, I'll check)......it IS called "Wolf Gold .223 Rem. 75 grain Multi-purpose tactical"....I don't know if this is widely available yet.... |
It'd be nice but I'm not sure I'm going to survive this dry spell with my sanity. I won't pay .24 per round for 223 like these people that are hoarding. I figure they are one of 2 types of people: A) Got more money than sense and are buying to be in the cool crowd or B) The Keep up with the "jones's" types that are buying this expensive shit on credit to be in the cool crowd. I figure that either the A group will finally be satisfied when their wives kick them out of bed to sleep with the ammo and stop buying. While the B group will finally max their cards and start dumping at a discount on the EE to cover the minimum payments on their cards. Either way I hope the HOARDERS eat shit and die already so us normal 500rd-1000rd per month guys like me can buy ammo on a budget. Bastards... |
PBTTTTTTTT!!!! No CC debt, and since I shoot, I buy when surplus is available. Anyways, it's the SURPLUS that is drying up, NOT the .223 stuff. It's gone up some, but it's readily available. And yep, I'm hoarding .308 surplus, it's cheap as hell right now [was cheaper a while ago] and since I have 5 .308 rifles I'm going to stock up. The normal prices on 308 blasting ammo in my area is around 10 bucks a box of 20. For 3 bucks and change I can get 20 rounds of as good as or better ammo. What's wrong with saving 60 or 70%? Course I put away about 7K of 7.62 x 39 last year, I was real stupid to do that, right? Seen any good surplus of that lately in quantity at a good price? Didn't think so........ |
Between war, illegals, ban ending a few months ago, ammo was bound to get scarce and expensive
I e-mailed Wolf last month and the ETA on the 75gnr is late this summer. They are still testing, according to the e-mail. |
WTF? Don't get your panties all in a wad now. Some of us have been buying ammo for a long time. Ammo purchases are part of my monthly budget, looks like you've got an ammo budget too. $200-$300 a month gets you 1000 ++ rounds a month. I enjoy shooting as much as I want whenever I want, sorry --VT |

Lead has gone up in price so has pwder, and primers. A gun store owner I know said his price on ammo went up 15% April 1st and it is going up 10% more by the end of the month. I don't believe all the rumors I hear but China has been buying lead, steel, aluminum and all the other metals they can. Combine that with some of the laws that went into effect under Bill Clinton and you have price increases now and more to come.
Plus we (our Government and Allies) have been using a lot of ammo for the past 3 years and I am sure we are stockpiling a bunch for the upcoming shootfest with the Iranians. |
That is just plain retarded. |
Ok, so who do I blame? Chinese Red Commie bastards? Clinton? Our troops? So confused. Reason #121 why I'm buying a 10/22 and forgetting about .223 for a good long while. Making me nuts. |
Its in the nature of surplus to "dry up".
Remember, in the 1990s, how much East German surplus everything there was? Smoke grenades; pop-up flares; AK magazines; etc.? 90% of its gone and the remaining 10% is going fast. How much "surplus" ammunition do you think the average country has? They release it; we buy it, hoard it or shoot it - and then there isn't anymore. Ten years later, they release some more. Go figure! |
It's "Peak Ammo" time, you were warned!!!
ALL AMMO comes from decayed dinosaurs and plants that have been laying deep underground for millions of years. Didn't you know that? In another 30 years or so ALL THE AMMO WILL BE GONE AND ALL OF YOUR BARBARIC GUNS WILL BE USELESS!!! |
