No matter what you think of NASCAR, this ploy by NBC was fucked up, and NASCAR nation should be commended for not falling for the trap

NBC News baited the hook, but netted nothing in its "sting" attempt to find anti-Muslim sentiments during the Martinsville race weekend.

By its own admission NBC News was so "intrigued by the results of a recent Washington Post/ABC News poll and other articles regarding increasing anti-Muslim sentiments in the United States" that it decided to make the news, rather than merely report.

ALSO
NASCAR's governing body called a network television news magazine "outrageous" on Wednesday, saying it tried to provoke anti-Muslim reactions from spectators at last week's race for a story about growing U.S. sentiment against Islam.

Syndicated columnist Michelle Malkin on Monday posted an e-mail -- an apparent solicitation to Muslim groups -- on her Web site. Malkin does not work for NBC, but posted the e-mail under the heading "NBC: Staging the news again?" The e-mail, written by Tarek El-Messidi but not authorized by NBC News, in part said:

I have been talking with a producer of the NBC Dateline show and he is in the process of filming a piece on anti-Muslim and anti-Arab discrimination in the USA. They are looking for some Muslim male candidates for their show who would be willing to go to non-Muslim gatherings and see if they attract any discriminatory comments or actions while being filmed.

They recently taped two turbaned Sikh men attending a football game in Arizona to see how people would treat them. They set them up with hidden microphones and cameras, etc.

They want to do the same thing 2 or 3 other times (in various parts of the USA) with one or two Muslim men in each setting. They are looking for men who actually "look Muslim". They want a guy with no foreign accent whatsoever, a good thick beard, an outgoing personality, and someone willing to wear a kufi/skullcap during the filming.

That said, I'm urgently looking for someone who can be filmed this April 1st weekend at a Nascar event (and other smaller events) in Virginia. NBC is willing to fly in someone and cover their weekend expenses. The filming would take place all day on Saturday and Sunday. (complete text hereexternal link)

The inference is that NASCAR fans are bigots, and NBC News was hoping to bait fans into making insensitive remarks to the Muslim / Arab people it had planted at the track.

Ramsey Poston, NASCAR's managing director of corporate communications, said Wednesday that no instances of unrest were reported. "No one bothered them," Poston said.

It's hard to imagine that NBC News would try to entrap fans in a ploy to make its Dateline segment juicier. But apparently the network did just that; NBC did not deny its actions when confronted by NASCAR.

In a statement released by NBC, it noted that more "plants" are in the works: "It's very early on in our newsgathering process, but be assured we will be visiting a number of locations across the country and are confident that our reporting team is pursuing this story in a fair manner."

Mind-boggling, that's the only way I know to describe that mentality.

"NASCAR thinks it's absolutely outrageous that you have a news organization trying to make the news instead of reporting the news," Poston said.

While NBC News is at it, why not send a few Kluxers into the infield at Talladega? Talk about being short-sheeted by the end of the night.

NBC News should know that NASCAR isn't the last bastion of redneck; the people at NBC Sports thought so much of NASCAR -- and its diverse fan base -- that it chipped in with TNT to spend $1.2 billion for broadcast rights the past six years.

Mike Smith, director of public relations for Martinsville Speedway, said that the Dateline crew's presence wasn't as stealth as it possibly hoped.

"Our security knew almost immediately that [the Dateline crew] were on site and they were monitored the whole time they were here, for obvious reasons -- their protections, fans protection -- and they were not disturbed," Smith said. "It says a lot about our fans.

"If there is an upside, it shows that the image so many people have of NASCAR fans is a false one, and it shows that not only at Martinsville Speedway, but at NASCAR tracks in general, it shows what type of security we have in place that can discover something like this, observe it and make sure nothing happens.

"We've gotten calls [Thursday] from fans praising our security and wanting the number for Dateline," Smith said. "As disappointed as we are, we feel pretty good about the end result."

Take a bow, NASCAR Nation.

BULLFUCKINGSHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!

You are NOT "gathering news", that implies that there is an event occurring of which you are investigating and reporting on.  What you mega-asswipes are doing is CREATING A FABRICATED SITUATION and then "reporting" the results of your contrivance.

MSM isn't even TRYING to appear as journalists or reporters any more.  Don't have a story?  No problem, well just conjure one up and do so in a way that fits the agenda we're pushing.

Cocksuckers.

As long as they stay in the gates and inside the track I doubt they will get what they are looking for. Now in the parkinglots and the camping areas from say 11pm to 2am......all bets are off. The fact that they have brought this out in publics just begs a"hold my beer and watch this" stunt.

What they should have done is had them boys scream that Dale Ernhardt sucked. It wouldn't matter what race they were, they would probably get a butt whoopin.....

Contrary to what NBC thinks, most people aren't racists. Not even in Martinsville Virginia.

Liberals, on the other hand, are the biggest group of biggots you can find...

Most of the people in Martinsville are too drunk to see straight.  They could put a woman in a black burka and all a fan thinks is that she is wearing a Dale Earnhardt hooded sweatshirt.

I used to be a race fan, but NASACAR has moved away from its roots.  I used to go to a lot of races, but I don't even watch them on TV anymore, let alone paying $85 a ticket.

Wow, how stupid can NBC be?

So, what's next? They can't get anyone to make any racist remarks at two muslim men sitting in the stands of a NASCAR event, so next time they tell them to tape candles to their bodies under their shirts and then during the national anthem, rasie their shirts up and start screaming "allah ackbar!"

I can just see it now, NBC reporting how the "racist" NASCAR fans attacked two innocent muslim men just minding their own business.

How long will it be before everyone realizes that the wacked-out news media is a big part of the whole problem in the first place? It's as if they need to keep coming up with new hysteria-generating ideas or there'd be no "news."

They'd have you think that they're going around putting out fires, when in actuality they have a lit torch behind their backs.

How about they get two Hasidic Jews (fake of course!) try to gain entry into Saudi Arabia!
They can carry their secret camera under their Yarmulka.
Fucking asshole reporters. LIke somehow despite all the shit thats going on in the world that people should be "shamed" for being suspicious of Hardcore Muslims.
Notice how they pick what they perceive as the most "redneck" "racist" place to go and shame "conservatives" for not being "multi-cultural" enoough.

Yes, this type of thing reaks of social psychologist wannabes looking to burn a group they have already stereotyped.   This type of journalism does fall under the investigative branch, but it is sketchy.   If the stooges acted just like any other NASCAR fan (except for looking a certain way), then there really is no entrapment.   I'm sure they thought they would get good footage.

But they didn't and Nascar fans should be proud.  The truth will set NBC free.

Now the real test of whether NBC news has any integrity in this process is for them to broadcast these reasults.  Or will the segment be scrapped because of "non-news" results?  we shall  see

Actually, I say this in a rather condescending manner, as a long-time reader on this board we all know all of this stuff is BS, witness the Dan Blather debacle.  Many people believe the news media is beyond reproach, but they can switch gears instantly from reporting the news to making the news.

I've been a NASCAR fan as long as I can remember, I live not to far from the Allison's, and Neil Bonnet,( used to live)  and used to see them in local resturants often. I don't like the new uppity  nascar, but I don't like racist rednecks either. I go to both Talladega races almost every year, there are generally free tickets around, if you look. Now there are plenty of black families there, and other minorities, and I have never witnessed any racist act by anyone, most people welcome them with open arms, and figure if they are at the races, they can't be all bad. Also it was said before, why in the hell would NBC want to give NASCAR a bad image, when they spend a fortune to have the tv rights?

Someone needs to "plant" a "one of these things is not like the others" at NBC.  Someone with excellent credentials (and lots and lots of patience) somehow gets a job reporting at NBC and starts hidden camera filming reactions to conservative, pro-2nd views.  Show them making the news up.  The only snag is someone would probably have to pretend to be a gay, transvestite wiccan who volunteers for PETA or ELF in their spare time in order to have the right stuff to get the job.

NBC creating news?  Who would'a thunk it?

Those libs seriously believed that there would be problems, because they're convinced that anyone that attends a NASCAR race is a biggot.  Those jackasses think anoyone not in line with their agenda is filled with hate.  They are the ones filled with hate, hatred for white people, hatred for America.  The mainstream news IS the enemy.

They have been trying, for decades, to tear this country apart and rebuild it into some bullshit socialist utopia.  CBS manufactured that whole Dan Blather "Florida National Guard memo" and then tried to pass it off as news.  Don't tell me that Dan did this on his own, they had announced plans to run that trash three days before the election.  But the brass bumped it earlier far tactical reasons(swift boat vets).  THE MSM IS THE ENEMY.

They will hide or downplay news favorable to America, they will trumpet every American failure or weakness.  Anyone know what the curent unemployment rate is? HMM?  4.7%, lowest in six years.  Why haven't they announced that on the front page of the papers?  If it was the highest in six years we would hear nothing but stories about runaway unemployment.

Back to the NASCAR news manufacuring.  I wonder of the would place say, a Korean shopkeeper, in the NAACP conference to see if there was racism there?  Or maybe a Jew at a Nation of Islam conference.  I bet they would get some "news" there.

Let me sum up my thoughts.  THE MAINSTREAM NEWS MEDIA HATES AMERICA AND IS THE ENEMY.

thank you for you time.

3 out of 4 fans responding to a poll don't think there's anything wrong with Toyota racing in NASCAR.  Hardly sounds like bigotry.

Are the ratings on Dateline going into the shitter that fast that they have to make stuff up.

BTW just how do you tell a muslim NASCAR fan from a regualr NASCAR fan?  Are they wearing a #8 on their burkha or keffiyah?  Which driver are they cheering for ...?  hope it's not Jeff....

I'll bet if they waltzed some muslim reporters and tv production people into NBC it would be easy to to the same thing.  You could bet the attention of everyone would be on them....
