Esposito, a highly decorated 30-year-plus veteran of the force, has been chief of department since 2000. He has been awarded 27 medals, including two Medals of Valor and the prestigious Combat Cross.
He was also given an award from the Shomrim Society, an NYPD Jewish group, last October because of his commitment to the Jewish community.
"The last person in the world who would make anti-Semitic comments would be Joseph Esposito," said Lt. Jason Margolis, president of the society.

While Esposito almost certainly meant "despite my deep respect for the jewish faith, please get these rioting SOBs out of here, regardless of their race, creed or color" I would guess someone who has been in the NYPD as long as he has should have known that that comment would be used against him.
