LONGMONT, Colo. (AP) — Dozens of high school students protested a temporary school policy forbidding students from displaying the U.S. flag — as well as flags from other countries — amid racial tensions following immigration rallies.

Skyline High School Principal Tom Stumpf said American flags were brazenly waved in the faces of Hispanic students and in one case a Mexican flag was thrown into the face of another student.

"When it involves the American flag and its abuse in vilifying other people, we simply will not tolerate it," Stumpf said. "They were using the symbol derisively as misguided patriotism."

Students were warned about the policy Friday and several were suspended, although Stumpf would not provide details. Then, about 100 students protested during lunch time.

Student Dustin Carlson told Denver station KCNC-TV that he was suspended for two days.

"I'm getting suspended for it and personally I think that's uncalled for," he said. "If this country means freedom, then why can't we fly our own flag? It's ridiculous."

Thousands of high school students Friday in California, Texas, Nevada and other states protested the tough immigration laws proposed in the House. Some waved Mexican flags and carried signs saying "We are not criminals."

On Monday, about 150 high school students, including some from Skyline, protested in Longmont.

"People are taking it to a whole other level," said Laura Avitia. "I don't think they know why we were protesting."

Why should that surprise anyone? ~~Public~~ gooberment schools are ground zero for "zero tolerance". After all it must the the flags fault for causing the problems, so we must ban all flags. That's the best way to be sure, isn't it?

Me thinks this is a major fire mission and that school district and local/regional news need to be hit with thousands of e-mails and phone calls to let them know how America feels on this issue.

As I have said before; Politcial Correctness will be our undoing.

How dare someone offend someone else, how dare we teach our children that life is tough, how dare we promote competition, how dare we point out that there are winners and losers. God forbid we make people responsible for thier actions if they break the laws of this nation. Shame on us for standing up for ouselves and pointing out that something is wrong with illegal immigration. Embrassing other cultures is madatory, but patriotism and pride in our own country and it's institutions is somehow bad and must be changed or stopped.

Here's a flag waiving idea; I think it's time to start flying the colors more. I propose we (the members of ARFCOM) all get new or pull out our gently used car flags and display them as we drive (Like people did after 9/11). Then drive through those neighborhoods of our communities that need to see the colors of this nation in addition to just our normal daily driving routes.

Put a band-aid on the real problem but banning the flag instead of addressing the real problem, illegal immagrants.

Ban legally owned guns instead of addressing the real problem, criminals.

Lazy way to "Handle" the problems really. It (the problem) is still there Mr. Stumpf, eliminating the "symbol" only makes the issue continue to boil behind the scenes. Possibly to arrupt into violence as people get frustrated on how to show how they feel.

This is the most appalling thing that I have heard in a long time what's next. Banning the AMERICAN FLAG in AMERICA regaurdless of the reason is like spitting in the faces of every man and women that has faught for our country to keep it's freedom. I am so upset that this is going on my fiance faught in the Army for our freedom and this just discussted him to no avial. I think that they should never have done this to them.

My fiance has been on this sight for three years and he said that this is the worst thing that he has ever seen we both thought that this would be up to page 3 by now.

I thought that if you lived in the US regardless of what you ethnic background or the color of your skin we are all AMERICAN'S if we are hear legally. If people do not want the freedom that comes with being an AMERICAN then they need to go back to there country of origin. I was born and raised in this country and if my son can not show his patriotisum how he feels he wants to then I will take him out of public school and teach him myself.

At least some students are becoming aware of the situation around them.

Unfortunately, this will get much worse before it will get better. I teach a class at the local community college, in order to get student levels up, they want me to teach illegals. How's that for shit? I couldn't get any money to send my daughter to college years ago, now they are willing to let illegals in the class so the school can get extra funding.
