Where I work, we get a semi-annual bonus. It will just appear on our paycheck twice a year. It's at the discretion of my boss for how much the amount is. Well today is payday/bonus-day, and I looked at my check, and the bonus is an insane amount. I have worked at this company for 7 years and this particular bonus is 5 times the amount it's ever been in 7 years of employment. Bascially the bonus equates to 50% of my annual salary, which is crazy. Should I question the amount with my boss, or simply thank him for the very generous bonus and not mention the amount?

Talk to the boss first...then hookers n' blow
ETA: Seriously..especially if you want to make a career at this place.....talk to the boss |
It's a mistake. Just sign it and send it to me and I will rip it up for you.
Thank him for the bonus.
I wouldn't yell out in front of everyone in the office "Thanks for giving me $XX,XXX in bonuses!" Just thank him, and sit on the money for a few weeks if it really seems unreasonable. He may ask for it back if it is a mistake. |
I have direct deposit for my paycheck. The money is in my account. |
Save a big chunk of it, you'll need it come tax time next year.
My ass is still bleeding from my severance check |
Cash it. If you question it, he'll think you feel that you don't deserve it. Then he'll begin to question it. IOW, never look a gift horse in the mouth.
If it's a mistake he can ask for the difference back. So I would definitely check with him to make sure it's correct.
I'd ask him if the amount is correct. If nothing else and it is it makes you appear honest and upright to him.
Then send it to me for proper disposale. |
Thank him, cash it and then sit on it. It usually only takes a few days before they release that they screwed up and want their money back.

When is this thread going to evolve into the "what should I buy with my bonus" thread?
I guess there was one suggestion (the MG). I suggest buying a good 50K worth of various calibers of ammo. After that, you should upgrade if you have any firearms that are lacking or not top of the heap. Les Baer or custom Caspian 1911, Sako bolt guns, Barrett M82A1 .50 cal, etc. You get the picture. And then a truckload of SKS' and ammo to hand-out to the neighborhood when the invasion of illegals goes violent. I'd say your work is cut-out for you TS. Get busy! P.S. Heck... maybe your boss knows it's all going downhill in a hurry and WANTS you to get all of this stuff NOW! Did you ever think of that? |
Talk to him, especially because it's direct deposit. If you withdrawl it or spend some of it and they realize the problem you may end up overdrawing your account.
Just remember, if it is a mistake, the IRS already knows it and make sure your W-2's you get next year for this years wages are correct.

Update: So a guy I work with (under the same boss) just called me and he was kinda him-hawing around and then he says: "hey man.....ummmmmm.......can I ask you a question about the bonuses. Was your bonus in-line?" I know right away why he's calling. Well... I find out his bonus was about 5X what is normally is. It appears our boss wants to make sure we are happy. I'm guessing because we've had a few people leave recently. Fooking unbelievable!!
Make sure your account draws interest, don't spend any of it, and ask him about it next week.
I'd just go up to him and say, "Thank you so much for this year's bonus. It's nice to know how much you value my contribution to this company."

Yeah, no kidding!! And to expand on this question, which I'm sure a few other guys are wondering, what kind of work do you do? Just being nosy. Vague answer is fine, too. Or, no answer as well. And congrats!! vmax84 |

i don't know why, but that visual was very funny [posting in this thread hoping that the karma will rub off. I deseperately need it] |

All I gotta say is GOOD FOR YOUR BOSS man. There are so many cut-throat businessmen and lazy workers these days. It's is DAMN nice to see things like this once in a while. I'm envious of you TS. Enjoy your bonus...
Thank you. The money couldn't have come at a better time. My fiancé and I just bought a new house, which needs lots of furniture and decor (according to her). I just need more ammo and could care less about the furniture and decor. I work in a technical role in the PR/Marketing dept, for a high-tech company. I design high-performance computers. |

Thank you. Honestly...I really thought it was an error. If I had felt is was a real bonus, I would not have posted it here. Now I feel like a smuck for bragging. |
Congrats. You should still make it known to your boss that it was apprciated,

Beers are on TacticalStrat.
All night long. Food too. Lot's of food. And hookers too ........ and some blow. (Ok, never mind the blow. But for sure the hookers. Definately hookers). |

Let me know if their hiring. I had a customer do something like that, the company marked their 20th year in business by giving everyone 2 weeks pay for every year of service. Just about all the employes had been there right from the start. So they got 40 weeks pay as a bonus! By the way congradulations! Atleast you are blessed with a good employer. My company just dumped 1000 of us!
Sorry to hear that. I worked for shit companies all my life and then just lucked into this job. |
Thanks for giving us a little insight on what you do for a living.
Personally, I always thought a letter was much more impressive than a verbal statement. I think a simple thank you letter to your boss would put you one more notch up on his good grace post. Just my 2 cents. Anyway, good job and best wishes to you and the soon to be Mrs. TS!! vmax84 |

WHAT??????
BULLSHIT!!!!! YOU MEAN TO TELL ME YOUR BOSS GAVE YOU THAT BIG OF A BONUS WITHOUT A UNION TO MAKE THEM DO IT?????? j/k CONGRATS MAN!!! Enjoy it. TXL |
It's a good idea to check with the boss. I've seen errors in payroll before, sometimes it was a matter of an extra zero at the end. If it's not an error, you'll have an opportunity to thank him. If it is an error, you'll show integrity. Not to mention, if a company has the right to ach payroll into your account, they also have the right to back out the money if I'm not mistaken.
demand a raise.
if they can throw that much around on "bonuses", you aren't getting your fair share. |
Congrats!!! You're obviously an asset to the company and that only comes from hard work. You've earned it, now treat yourself!
You got a 50% bonus on a bi-anual bonus!
You do realize that the year is not even half over, YOU COULD GET MORE. If you feel so bad about it, just send it my way, I will feel great. |
just mention to him how pleased you are and how you can now afford the surgery you always wanted in Guatamala
Oh, you poor thing....worrying about how FUCKING BIG a bonus check is!!! All kidding aside, it might not be a bad idea to just check with the boss and make sure the amount is correct. Don't look at it as second-guessing them. They will more than likely appreciate and note your integrity.
Semi-annual. Bi-Annual is every two years. |
Your boss is obviously gay, and is coming on to you. In fact, he may have been confused by the term "Bi-annual"; thinking that that it meant "bi-anal".
I stand corrected. Yep.....it's an every six month bonus. Thanks! |
