KEMPTHORNE ORDERS FLAGS TO HALF-STAFF IN HONOR OF DAVID BRUCE BLEAK
Medal Of Honor Recipient To Be Laid To Rest Tuesday
(BOISE) Governor Dirk Kempthorne has ordered flags at the State Capitol
Building and other state buildings and facilities be flown at half-staff
on Tuesday, March 28 in honor of David Bruce Bleak on the day he will be
laid to rest in Arco.
Bleak, a native of eastern Idaho, was awarded the Medal of Honor by
President Dwight Eisenhower for "conspicuous gallantry and indomitable
courage above and beyond the call of duty" while serving as part of a
U.S. Army medical detachment in the 223rd Infantry Regiment, 40th
Infantry Division during the Korean War.
During the engagement for which he received the Medal of Honor, Bleak
killed several enemy soldiers while tending to and carrying a number of
his wounded comrades to safety under heavy enemy fire, despite being
wounded himself.
"We forever owe an invaluable debt of gratitude for Mr. Bleak's courage
and actions in the face of the enemy," Kempthorne said. "His legacy of
selfless service and sacrifice is part of the foundation upon which this
great nation is built. It's appropriate that we honor his life and mark
his passing by flying the flag at half-staff."
