An 18-year-old man killed himself with a homemade hand grenade Friday morning, Detroit Police said. But his family members say it was an accident, not suicide.

Police responded to an explosion around 2:50 a.m. at a home on the 2400 block of Calvert on Detroit's west side.

The man, who was identified as Dejuan Noel, was rushed to Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, where he was pronounced dead, Police Spokesman James Tate said. No one else was injured.

Officers also recovered an empty grenade and another grenade loaded with gunpowder and a wick, Tate said. He said there was additional gunpowder and chargers as well.

"Our bomb squad was called out to the location and they are currently in the process of detonating the additional materials recovered," Tate said at 9:20 a.m.

The death remains under investigation, but police said one possible motive is that Noel was distraught over a breakup with a girlfriend. Police said the report has not been confirmed, however.

Family members outside the home Friday said Noel’s death was accidental, not a suicide.

“There’s no way he killed himself,” said Noel’s 42-year-old uncle Patrick Hawthorne.

Hawthorne said Noel’s girlfriend had showed up with another man and an argument ensued, adding that Noel may have accidentally detonated the explosive during the dispute.

The brother was just on the news, he said the man lit the fuse of the homemade grenade but didn't intend for it to go off. It blew up in his hands. Darwin Award nominee no doubt.

Reminded me of the Mony Python movie...

ARTHUR:
Consult the Book of Armaments!
BROTHER MAYNARD:
Armaments, chapter two, verses nine to twenty-one.
SECOND BROTHER:
And Saint Attila raised the hand grenade up on high, saying, 'O Lord, bless this Thy hand grenade that, with it, Thou mayest blow Thine enemies to tiny bits in Thy mercy.'

And the Lord did grin, and the people did feast upon the lambs and sloths and carp and anchovies and orangutans and breakfast cereals and fruit bats and large chu--
MAYNARD:
Skip a bit, Brother.
SECOND BROTHER:
And the Lord spake, saying, 'First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin. Then, shalt thou count to three. No more. No less. Three shalt be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, nor either count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then, lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who, being naughty in My sight, shall snuff it.'
MAYNARD:
Amen.
KNIGHTS:
Amen.
ARTHUR:
Right!

One!... Two!... Five!
GALAHAD:
Three, sir!
ARTHUR:
Three!

It's the popo's fault that he had to build a homemade gernade instead of buying real one at the 7/11.
