I remember once about 5 years ago for some reason I didn't have my Oregon drivers license on me and I was being carded for a drink.
Since I didn't have my ODL, I showed them my CHL. Didn't accept it, need a valid ODL. WHY? My CHL not only proves my age backed with a picture, it also proves I'm not a felon. So why is it a license that proves MORE then my ODL isn't valid anywhere to show who I am? |
I've used it twice for getting through security at the airport.
and I've had it refused too. |
In a nutshell, they aren't trained to know what it is or whether it's fake. Secondarily, some states don't have it in law that it is a valid form of ID.
Too many laws |
I thought you had to have a picture ID when being carded? I don't know what CHL's look like in other states, but Virginia's CHLs don't have pictures on them. MJD

What really gets my undies in a bunch is that I once went into a credit union to cash a check from my parents. I had my driver’s license, debit card, DPSST card, and CHL. They would not let me cash the check because I didn't have proper ID. They wouldn't take the Debit card because it was not a "Credit card". They gave me a list of acceptable ID. The GODDAMN Mexican ventricular Consulate ID was on there... But I can’t use a CHL?!?!... WTF???!!! I call BS and leave. Went to my own bank and cashed it. I'm still bent about that and will continue to be. Mark. P.S. The Oregon CHL has a photo on it. |
I was at San Diego NAS getting an ID card for some contractor work. They asked for 2 forms of ID.
1) Florida Driver's License 2) Florida CWP The fruitcake that saw #2 about coded on the spot! Him: "You don't have it on you, do you?" Me: "On a Navy base in California?" Him: "Why would you even want one?" Me: "Because I don't live in this shithole state and can HAVE ONE." Took awhile, but I finally got my badge |
Why would you ever want to flash that thing around? The only person that should ever see that card, IMO is a LEO upon request.
Anything else is just attention seeking behavior. "Look at me." ETA - LOL, kissfan if you really said that, good for you! |
They don't care for it as a means of ID crossing the US-Canadian border, either. 4 people in the car and I handed the guy in the booth 2 passports, 1 DL and my CHL. The guy in the booth asks, "Who is carrying the concealed handgun?" Sheesh.
And this was coming HOME from Canada! |
Sure did. I hate Kalifornika attitudes. I have added it to a growing lists of states where I refuse to do work. I'm an IT consultant. |
If it's refused, it's not because it's not a valid ID, it's because the person is ignorant. CHL's are valid ID here in TX too. It's just that a lot of people don't even know they exist and the few that DO know about CHLs have never seen one before. Employees are trained to recognize fake DLs but not CHLs. Oh well........... I don't get my panties in a bunch over it.
My Colorado one has "Sheriff" written across the top so I use it and everyone thinks it is a LEO ID card.
I have even used it in Canada & Europe and it was accepted both places. |
Hasn't been turned down yet. Use it 50% of the time when asked for ID.
Used mine at the BMV and Post Office. Worked both times. They also seemed to move a lot faster after looking at it.
Long story why, but a TSA agent asked me for two forms of PHOTO ID at Chitcago O'Hare. The only other form of photo ID I had was my PA CCP.
TSA guy took it as valid ID since I kept on going through security and didn't miss my flight. Other than that I have never used my CCP as ID. |
ROFL, nice. |
O you're just asking for trouble. |
That's how I feel also. Again, the only time I've done this is when for reason my ID was not in my wallet and I needed to show an ID. |
usually people don't know that it is a legal state ID or they need to see a picture ID. I used it when I wrote a check a few times.
A lot of the permits here are 20-25 years old, so the pics are VERY out of date.
It's really conceptionally no different that a hunting license. Would you consider a hunting license a form of ID if it had a picture. While I don't think I can find FL's version of it codified, I do know that you have to carry a valid form of ID with your CCW license.
ROFL - reminds me of when I was in San Diego during a company "Picnic" for reps from all over the country. We had rented out a dance club/disco and all had to show ID to get in. I decided to have some fun and showed the bouncer my CCW card from TN. He about had a heart attack, called over another bouncer, they both looked ready to fight me. He asked me if I had a firearm on me and I just looked at him like he was a dumbass - "Yeah, I snuck my Glock 7 ceramic gun on the plane." |
there are plenty of idiots out thre that equate every card that doesnt say "driver's license" on it to being a membership card for sam's club. i bet dollars to donuts that if you asked around, a good percentage would not think a CHL was a gov't issued ID
I've used it as a second ID when asked for 2 forms... It's not attention seeking, it's what I have in the wallet. |
Is a hunting license something you pick up down at Bob's Sports 'n' Stuff for $100, or something issued by your CLEO after submitting to an FBI background check and providing personal references? I don't know, your state laws may vary. |
I use mine at the bank all the time. |
I only use it when I DON'T want to use a credit card as a second form of ID. |
A 2nd photo ID? What, your ID from work, where some secretary laminated a polaroid with your name typed under it and a company logo? I don't have anything other than my driver's license with a photo.
Okay, okay; point taken. I was thrown of by FL's use of the Department of Agriculture as the issuing office. I personally don't use it as a form of ID and it's actually hidden from plain sight in my wallet. You're right, if I have a photographic license that I had to get fingerprinted, notorized, and FBI background checked to receive, then why would it be anything other than a form of identification. The only reasons I can think of is that it's either codified as specifically not being a form of ID, or not specifically mentioned at all. |

Ours are really bad. Made of paper, one sided and without a photo. (At least my county's is) In fact, it isn't even valid UNLESS you also have a proper photo ID.
AZ CWP isn't valid without a valid driver's license as well so what's the point in trying to use it as ID?
Actually, for military purposes, only one form of ID has to be photo. A birth certificate, social security card, or even in some cases a baptism certificate. But technically, NOT a CCW license! Goofy stuff. |
I don't use mine either...... in the states that is. I do however like to use it as ID at the Canadian casinos, party stores, and bars. But have never tried it at the border.
That's interesting about the "Sheriff" across the CO card. I might have to get one of those.
I've used mine as an ID a couple fo times...but by now it has made it's way through the wash a few times and is looking pretty ratty. I wouldn't blame someone for turning it down.

once, at a bar, a red-headed bitch of a bartender asked for my id and credit card after i ordered a beer.
i handed her my visa and my chl. she snorted and said, "I WANT YOUR ID, NOT YOUR HANDGUN LICENSE, THAT'S NOT AN ID!!!" in a really loud voice. i replied: "THAT IS A VALID STATE OF TEXAS ISSUED IDENTIFICATION CARD WITH MY PICTURE ON IT. IT IS NOT OUT OF DATE. EVERY TIME I GIVE YOU MY DRIVER LICENSE YOU SCRAPE OFF HALF THE MAG STRIPE ON THE BACK WITH YOUR PAPER CLIPS AND MAKE EVERY COP I TALK TO HAVE TO TYPE THE NUMBER IN HIS COMPUTER BY HAND. THIS PISSES HIM OFF. I NORMALLY DON'T WANT TO DO THAT. THE BANK ACCEPTS THIS AS A VALID FORM OF ID, ANY COP WHO STOPS ME ON THE ROAD ACCEPTS THIS AS A VALID FORM OF ID. YOU'RE A FLIPPIN' BARTENDER AND GIVE ME BACK MY CREDIT CARD, I'M GOING TO HAVE A BEER SOMEWHERE ELSE!"... in an even LOUDER voice... i got my license and my card back and walked out the front door. later, i heard that she was fired on the spot, as the owner was barbacking that night. no, i was not carrying and would not do so if drinking, if carrying i don't drink at all, and if drinking, i don't carry at all. i was just trying to keep my DL pristine. i did get a smattering of applause when i left. seems she's been PMS-ing all over most of the customers for some time. i never did get a beer that night, but i'm glad old carrot top lost her job, swinging tits and all... |
My CHL has my picture just like my oregon DL. |
MN dosen't. Ours is a pretty cheesy little plastic card. |
I guess I'm looking at it from the angle of it tells the SAME EXACT information(DOB, current addess, height etc etc etc), has my picture, is issued by a state authority and if if they were trained for 2 minutes they could know these card holders trying to use this as an ID in their establishment has 0 felonys on his record.. Hell, ILLEGAL's IN MY STATE CAN GET A Oregon drivers license. Yes ladies and gentalmen its true, my state is F'd. And yet a CHL isn't even considered a valid form of ID and would take 2 minutes worth of training for an employee of an establishment to use it as a valid form of ID. |
Isn't it illegal in most states to require a drivers license as ID? It normally must be a state issued picture ID with your date of birth on it. Discrimination thing...
If you carried a conceal carry badge it wouldn't be a problem
I've used mine multiple times to pass through security checkpoints at the airport.
It is, you just ran into a dumbass who didnt know WTF he was doing. |
Try this one
TEXAS won't accept MILITARY ID for alcohol and tobacco purchases as they only recognize valid Texas DL CALIFORNIA won't take the NEW MILITARY ID because it DOES NOT STATE YOUR EYE AND HAIR COLOR...........IT HAS A COLOR PHOTO WTF?? Crazy Crazy everywhere |
I haven't tried to use mine as ID. But ours differ by county. In the county I used to live in, the CWP was just a printed piece of paper, with no picture. In my current county, it is a hard, printed card, with my picture. Hell, even the fee for the permit differs by county. Old county was $10, current county is $15-$25.
It's a state (gov't) issued photo ID. Tell 'em to kiss your ass.
I've never thought of using mine as a form of ID, except for one of the 2 IDs required for buying a gun in VA. |
How about this one. Many bars in the North Dallas suburbs require a driver's license in order to let you in. It's not to check your age, they have to enter it into the computer in order to meet Texas ABC requirements.
So you can't drink and drive.... but you need a driver's license to drink. Go figure???? |
